Flushed Bra and Panties Causes Sewerage Flood

TheNorthernecho.co.uk in England reports that a bra and a pair of knickers caused a flood that damaged over 20 homes. The bra and panties also were to blame for a flow of excrement that went down the street as a result of the collapsed sewage pipes.

Yesterday, Northumbrian Water stated that after a bra and knickers were flushed down a toilet, they got caught on a sewage pipe located under a busy road. When the water company dug down to find out what the problem was, they found the panties and bra snagged across a pipe that was nine inches in diameter.

News.bbc.co.uk reports that a mix of bra, knickers, heavy rain, and a build up of fat and grease caused the pipe to explode. Following the bursting of the pipe, the busy road above collapsed. Dirty water and excrement flowed into people's houses and down Middleton Lane in Middleton St. George, near Darlington.

The repairs to the pipes and road are estimated to cost over 15000 pounds and the road itself will remain closed down for a number of days. The water company is now warning members of the community to "think before they flush." A spokesperson for the Northumbrian Water Company strongly believes that if the bra and panties had not been flushed down the toilet, the sewer would not have collapsed, and that extremely irresponsible behavior is also to blame.

News.bbc.co.uk quoted a Northumbrian Water spokeswoman. She said, " These pipes are not designed to carry bras and knickers." Unfortunately no one wants to touch the offending items. They will remained bagged for a time and then disposed of properly."

Residents of Middleton St. George do not seem to blame irresponsible panty flushing for the flooding. They believe that the pipes simply were not able to handle the expanding population. Coun Doris Jones, from Darlington Borough Council was quoted on thenorthernecho.co.uk. She said, " I just can't accept that's[the underwear's] been wholly responsible."The main problem is the sewers just can't cope. They really are antiquated."
