A decline in circumcision has occurred. What is causing this decline in circumcision? Immigration? Is it because of religious reasons? Circumcision removes the foreskin from the penis, and is generally a procedure that is completed almost immediately after birth. In many places, the rate of circumcision is below 50%.

There is a catharsis occurring, wherein mothers are taking part in a changing attitude about the body. Mothers and fathers are not seeing reasons for circumcision and are opting to not complete the surgery.

Some say that the decline in circumcision is due to an increase in immigrants entering this country. There is more of a "Must it be done" attitude. Contrary to belief, it is not traumatic to the child in any way shape or form. Many authorities are stating it should be the choice of the child, and not made by the parents at birth. There are more side effects, when it is done at an older age than if the procedure was completed at birth.

Children should be circumcised. It is still common in Jewish and Muslim communities, and is seen as the 'proper way to do things'. Circumcision makes for easier genital hygiene, especially in children who have a difficult time enough to keep clean. Why make the excessive measures of an uncircumcised penis?

Circumcision may reduce the risk of penile cancer, urinary tract infections, and HIV. Foreskin that is intact is more likely to develop infection than a circumcised penis. A circumcised penis is conventionally healthier, and easier to maintain than an uncircumcised penis. If the child is older, and decides to become circumcised than it may not be possible to complete the surgery in some cases - so, it is better to do the procedure at birth and get it over with.

The health benefits of circumcision are often used to sway parents into completing the most common surgery in the United States. It is often offered for free to parents who have borne children in the hospital and is still covered by most health insurance companies.

Please do your research.

This article is nothing but pure propaganda. Almost all of this writer's points are refuted by medical science.

This may be the most poorly researched item I've ever read. It's full of misinformation. As a Registered Nurse, I assure you it IS traumatic for the child, medically unnecessary (it's cosmetic, at best), and infant circumcision is not endorsed by any medical organization in the world. I think this was written by Joshua Amos. Or by Sara R. I hope any parent considering circumcision will fully research the information and even watch a video of the surgery being performed. Shame on the author for posting false information! Kudos to insurance companies for not covering a cosmetic procedure on a non-consenting patient!

Unfortunately, this article is poorly researched and contains several factual errors. Just one example: You say circumcision is not traumatic to the child in any way. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics has plainly stated that circumcision is a painful experience for the newborn.

Actually, the lowest rates of HIV in the world are in places like Scandinavia, where males are rarely circumcised. America, by contrast, has a much higher rate of HIV and most males affected were circumcised. If you spend some time doing research on this issue you'll find that circumcision is actually not the way to go if you're looking at it purely from a sexual, health, or hygiene perspective. My father-in-law is a diplomat with the UN and so I've read numerous studies on this by top doctors the world over as I'm interested in the issue. One other thing is that most insurance policies in America don't cover circumcisions now and you must pay out of pocket.

How can a circumcised penis be conventionally healthier when foreskins exist naturally? It's a myth that it's easier to clean a circumcised penis; all men must wash their willies, and circumcision actually makes hygiene more difficult in the early years when infections are more common. The American Cancer Society states it doesn't reduce risk of penile cancer, and the evidence about UTIs is considered highly flawed by organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics. Circumcision always decreases sexual pleasure, as you lose highly sensitive nerve tissue during the procedure. Side effects aren't always minor and can indeed be MAJOR. Exposing the head of the penis causes a callous to form, making it LESS sensitive. More insurance companies are chosing NOT to cover it because it is UNNECESSARY, and that is the reason why people are turning away from it.
