Restaurant Review: Texas Coffee Company in San Angelo, TX

Once upon a time the only real coffee house in San Angelo was Baker Street. Then Starbucks came to town exciting jittery java addicts everywhere. But now a new challenger has arisen from the ashes of an old gas station. That challenger is Texas Coffee Company on Knickerbocker, right down the road from Baker Street.

Texas Coffee Company was opened by two partners who shared a love for coffee. Perhaps the most impressive thing is that they built it almost completely by themselves over a few months. The building is very impressive, with a very rustic look, which includes a drive-thru made out of the old gas station's garage. And yes, it is still a working garage and both ends can be closed by a garage door. There is a large covered outdoor seating area in the front that has many plants giving it the look of a garden.

The interior is just as impressive with its Texan motif. As you walk in you see the main seating area to the left, which includes several tables and some very comfortable and expensive looking leather chairs. There is also a small bar area against a part-wall that separates the seating area from the ordering area. Behind the main seating area is a short all that leads to a more private area that can be used for meetings and other get-togethers. To the right is the counter where you order. The atmosphere is outstanding.

As you check out the menu you will notice that they have much more to offer than just specialty coffee. They serve breakfast foods and pastries as well and deli sandwiches for lunch. The prices are about what you would expect, with specialty coffee ranging from $3-$4 dollars or so. Sandwiches can cost you $5 or more. Texas Coffee Company also sells merchandise like T-shirts and coffee cups. They also have a coffee club although the details are still being hashed out.
