The LDS church is a cult. How can that be you say? I have read numerous articles on common traits of organizations that are considered by most to be cults. Think honestly about the following characteristics of mind control:

The first tactic is "softening up" individuals, preparing them for mind manipulation. The other members of the branch of the church increase the individual's suggestibility and changing their thought process. Think about the exact repetition of testimonies in the church, "I know this church is true and that Joseph Smith is a prophet." Think about all the verbal drills that go on during a Sunday at the LDS churches, mainly prayers, reading the scriptures, going to church meetings, giving a testimonial, etc.

The second tactic is using rewards and punishment as a system to control a person's environment, time and sources for social support. Think about the advise given to a person new to the church. You should go the Family Home Evenings, all the institute classes available, Friday night dances, Saturday activities, then the Sunday meetings, baptisms, Temple trips, service projects, where does it end? Your week is planned for you. What about your non-member friends? They tell you to invite them to activities, to church. You should teach them the gospel. That's another recruit. Rewards are giving like another calling, blessings, passing the sacrament, endowment, being temple-worthy, etc.

I am a Christian, and lead a ministry at my university that works to build bridges and open doors of dialogue and discussion with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I can honestly say that, in all truthfulness, your article is wrong and hardly does the Mormons any justice. You bring up a lot of stereotypes, many of them outdated.

Mind control? That is a bit much.

Not true. I've been a member of the LDS church for over 30 years, and there's very little here that's accurate information.

Mormons believe that Jesus is the son of God but that he is not diety. Where christians believe God is triune the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. What the definition of cult is any faith that believes Jesus is not God. By that definition Mormons are a cult. They also border more towards the occult.

Some of the article is accurate, some isn't. The system and rewards? If you wish to understand the problems the Mormons face it is best to be inside of a religion for a while. I do not know whether odd things go in the temple or not. A lot of rituals seem weird to me, but it seems a lot of what I've heard goes on in the temple is just mind-numbingly boring.

Wow, what a form. I couldn't even finish what I was typing. So here is where I left off. Don't believe that unusal things go on in the temple because that is not true. No one would ever slit your throat for telling what happened in the temple. The temple is a sacred place to go. It is the closet we can get to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. The church does not manipulate people. We have the freedom of choice. The prophet was on 20/20 or sixty minute and talked about what goes on in the temple. It isn't a secret place it is just a sacred place for worthy members to go and be close to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ

I was a member of another denomination. All tell you to pray, read your scriptures, attend activities. This is not a form to gain control of people's mind. The LDS members know that Jesus Christ is our Reedemer, he came to wash away their sins, Jesus is the center of their homes, Jesus' birth, his life, his crucification and rising from the dead are all in the book of mormon. The LDS members do not judge other denomintions. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, if you will just go the church when you want to know what the church is about, you will find out that we teach the same things other denominations it is just the church was given scriptures (Book of Mormon)that prophets and other people living overseas what we now call the United States of America. I don't understand why no one can believe that the rest of the world would have things pertaining to Jesus Christ in their country. If you want to know the truth and understand the truth go directly to the church. Don't talk

Not sure where you obtained this 'information.' So what if it has markings of a cult? How is that necessarily a negative? Can you name any other very organized religion that is not steeped in ritual (just because it is more familiar doesn't mean it isn't ritual)?

The more you talk against us the more we become strong. I'm not upset with you. We know who we are and what we believe. Write more and you'll make as grow stronger. Good luck.

The article is great, but hey, work on your spelling and grammar!

Frightening stuff

There is not a Religion in the USA that isn't a cult. Men have turned God's words into a buisness and they want your money.

Interesting. I am annoyed when they knock on my door and refuse my answers that I already have a church, but I'm not so sure I would consider them a cult. I try not to judge others. That is God's job, not mine. You do give some good thoughts to ponder, but I would definitely need more research and have to actually experience it from living the Mormon life before I would truly know. I am a Christian, but I believe everyone is entitled to believe what they want to. You did a great job writing about this, though. :-)

I have several family members who are Mormons, and it is a very devout religion. I also grew up in an area with many Mormons. However, I must disagree with your statement about women. Though being a wife and mother is considered paramount and is definitely preferred, I don't know of any of my female friends/family members who work that are considered apostates. It's just considered a fact of life anymore.

Wow, you have covered every single mormon stereotype and presented it as fact. Obviously you have an axe to grind. Everyone is free to research, pray and simply ask about whatever religion they would like to learn about.
