Vivasuzi's 2007 Musical Movie Awards!
1) Best Guy-Friendly Musical
and the award goes to... Aladdin (1992) starring Scott Weinger, Robin Williams and Linda Larkin
Plot: In this animated movie, Aladdin is just a poor boy who runs into Jasmine, a princess. He is too poor however to impress her father. Aladdin also runs into Jafer who forces him to retrieve a magic lamp. However, the magic and the genie inside the lamp become Aladdin's because he rubbed the lamp. Now Aladdin has all the magic in the world to try and impress his princess, but can magic make it happen? You'll have to see!
Why it made the list: Aladdin belongs on this list because my boyfriend likes it. Yes I like it too, very much, but the fact is this is one of the few musicals that my boyfriend actually enjoys AND remembers the songs!
Favorite Song: Friend Like Me - Life is your restaurant, And I'm your maitre d', C'mon whisper what it is you want, You ain't never had a friend like me
2) Best Adaptation of a Broadway Musical!
and the award goes to... Chicago (2002) starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rene Zellweger and Richard Gere
Plot: Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart find themselves together in jail for crimes of passion. The two of them fight for the limelight and the press to try to swing the media their way and set them free. Billy Flynn comes in as a smooth-talking lawyer who can talk anyone into anything and takes on Velma's case...then Roxie's. Will they be set free? Rent it to see!
Why it made the list: Chicago is a wonderful movie based on an ok play. I'm not saying the play on Broadway is bad, but it is confusing. I for one never understood that all these musical numbers were more or less going on in Roxie's head. However the movie takes the good play and turns it into something anyone can understand. Besides that it is really entertaining.
