Although many dogs are stubborn, every one is trainable. What works for one dog, may not work for another. When a certain method doesn't work on a dog, many people give up and consider it "untrainable." Again, every dog can be taught.
The most basic command that every dog should know is "sit." This behaviour occurs when the dog rocks back on it's haunches and it's pelvis touches the ground. How do you train your dog to sit? There are several methods, but we will focus on: shaping the sit, using a toy, and using treats.

Shaping the Sit
Shaping is a training method that allows the dog makes his own choice. You will need treats and a clicker, which is a small, plastic device that makes a "click" noise when you press down on it. Go someplace where it's quiet, and begin your training session. At first, don't say anything to your dog; just wait for him to make his own decision. The instant he does something other than what he was previously doing, click! Give him a treat immediately after the click. This way, he will learn that good things come when he hears the click noise. After he's used to the clicker, start requiring different behaviors for another click. He can't just keep giving you his paw or turning or lying down, he needs to provide you with a new action. This way, you will create a "thinking dog." He will soon be giving you new performances to attempt to get another click. Eventually, your dog will offer you a sit. Instantly click and give him a treat. When your dog has given you a sit several times, begin adding the word, "sit." Always click afterwards and reward. Never repeat "sit" more than once, or you will ruin the concept of having a "thinking dog." You will also frustrate him if you repeat the word over and over again. Practice everyday, for a couple minutes each day. At last, your dog will understand sit. However, if this method doesn't work for your dog, consider using the toy method.
