You don't have to travel far to enjoy a good quality camping trip. If you have never camped before try camping in your own back yard. This can be a great way to see if you really enjoy sleeping out under the stars as much as you think you do. If that sudden down pour occurs you can always grab your pillow and blanket and head back indoors where it is warm and dry. You will also get a feel for what you would need if you actually decided to take a camping trip far from home.
If you do decide you like roughing it and think this might be a way to experience a great vacation try to borrowing things from those in your circle of friends who like to camp. You could offer to pay them for the privilege of using their equipment such as a tent. Camping equipment can run into the hundreds or thousands of dollars and unless you decide to become a die hard camper your best bet will be to borrow or rent it.
If you like camping and want to venture farther from home go online and check out different campgrounds that are available. Campgrounds can range from the tender foot kind that come with many of the comforts of home to the totally out of the way places where you are basically on your own. Choose wisely in where you decide to go. If you are at all unsure about how much you really want to rough it on your trip ere on the side of caution. You can always play Daniel Boone next time. It might also be a good idea to see what kind of security is offered at the campsite you will be visiting.
