I left Ohio years ago searching for that grand life on the East Coast only to realize that if you do not have the money to partake of what the Coast has to offer, you're sort of wasting your time trying to live there unless you have the resolve to take matters into your own hand and work to get ahead. Of course that depends on what your interests are to begin with, but my point is that life back in the Midwest wasn't quite as bad as I had thought that it was at the time. If you're like me, and you've left the Buckeye state for greener pastures you may be interested to know that the state is finally getting the word out about some of the finer points of living in Ohio that most of us took for granted. When I took a look through the Wall Street Journal and saw an advertisement by the Ohio Business Development Corporation describing how Stan had left South Carolina for work in Ohio, and actually stayed in the state and looks forward to living life and building on the career he has there, I figured I'd take a second look to see what they were talking about.

The state is still experiencing a slow but steady rate of population growth, though it would appear that the trend of shifting population away from some of the older metropolitan areas like Cuyahoga County to newer areas like the metropolitan area of Columbus, the second fastest growing major metropolitan area in the Midwest. This isn't to suggest that metropolitan growth in Ohio is centralized, however, as other key metropolitan areas such as Northeastern Ohio, and Southwestern Ohio continue to grow. People are still moving to the state and finding a different area than the state that was marked for having some of the worst crime in the nation and penned for a legacy of rough times while the manufacturing sector continued to move out of the Midwest I had grown to love and hate.

Takeaways
  • Ohio is experiencing modest, yet steady population growth
  • Most major cities are two hours away from each other
  • Metropolitain areas are growing into each other, and the landscape should change in the near future
Did You Know?
Ohio still makes important contribution to information technology and research, and is becoming known for its increasing growth in areas such as polymer science.
