Soy wax has many benefits over parrafin, aside from the fact that it is alot easier to work with. Soy wax is biodegradable, cleans up with warm water and soap, and burns up to 50% longer.

First you will need to make sure you have all the ingredients needed. The following ingredient list is measured to make 1lb of candles (*makes 1 16oz Jar OR 2 dozen Tealights OR 16 jumbo Tarts*).

What you will need:

1lb soy wax

1oz bottle fragrance oil

1 block soy candle dye

1 microwaveable glass container/bowl - preferably with a pour spout

1 candle thermometer

~

16oz candle jar and 5" Large Zinc Core Wick and 1 large wick tab

OR

24 clear plastic or aluminum tealight cups and 24 - 1" Small Cotton Braid Wick and 24 small wick tabs

OR

16 flexible baker cup cake molds (for tarts)

NOTE: In my personal experience with making soy candles, I have found that some wax doesn't blend well with the fragrance and dyes and ends up looking cloudy. To this day I have only found one wax that actually dries to an even colored, smooth and shiny finish, which is Single Pour Soy Wax Flakes from The Candle Source.

Also, keep in mind when purchasing fragrance oils that you want to look for the oils that say 'uncut'. This means the oil is raw and has not been diluted with any carrier oils. Raw oils will be strong enough to make a great smelling candle and will take less amounts to create your preferred strength.

And my last note to touch on is the wicks. I have found that for the jar/container candles it is best to use a wick with a zinc core. The zinc controls the burn so the wick doesn't burn too fast and sink into your jar candle wax. However, I prefer cotton braid wicking for smaller candles, such as tealights. The zinc core burns too slow for a small candle and ends up causing a huge flame when the wax melts away. Regular cotton braid wicking seems to burn at the perfect rate for this candle size.
