Having a "Star Spangled" Fourth of July party is a great American tradition. Let's talk about a little history and the reason this day has become such a traditional holiday to celebrate with family and friends. The history is interesting and fun to share with your children before your party.

It was Independence Day, July 4, 1776, the day our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. On July 8, 1776, the first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia's Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music. One year later, on July 4, 1777, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks. Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870, and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a holiday including full pay for federal employees. Today, we recognize the importance of this day with patriotic celebrations that include parades, fireworks, and picnics. We all know Americans love to eat!

Whether you are planning a big Fourth of July celebration or a small gathering of friends and family in the backyard, it is important to plan out the details of the day.
