If I said the name :Elizabeth Smart, Natalie Holloway, Laci Peterson, Chandra Levy or Kelsey Smith , you'd know exactly who I was talking about, right?

Do you know: Stepha Henry , Latoyia Figueroa, Amber Harris, Sintia Mesa, Chris Pineda ,Brendan Gonzalez or Tamika Huston?

No? Really? The people named all have one thing in common, they were/are missing. There is one huge disparity though; the people in the second list aren't white females. Oh, there's one other factor, they didn't get the media coverage that those in the first list got. In fact, the Stepha Henry case got bumped for coverage of Paris Hilton's front gate, on the day she went back to court. That's what I consider important stuff, right there."Cable news executives say they don't pick stories based on the race of the victims."The stories that 'go national' all have a twist or an emotional aspect to them that make them interesting," said Bill Shine, senior vice president of programming at Fox News."Link to story
Isn't a missing woman, man or child of any race, nationality or creed; emotional in and of itself? I'm sure it seems so to the friends and family of the missing. All disappearances have twists, they are all interesting. They all deserve the same amount of coverage. Why is it that no one seems to want to hear or report on the missing who aren't white, pretty or females.(Usually all three)Roy Peter Clark thinks he knows why. "It's all about sex," said Clark, vice president of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg,Fla.Young white women give editors and television producers what they want. "There are several common threads," Clark said. "The victims that get the most coverage are female rather than male. They are white, in general, rather than young people of color. They are at least middle class, if not upper middle class." (Link to his story)

I think it's time that all missing person cases were covered the same way. Either they all get hours of media attention, or no one does. For more information on this "Missing White Woman Syndrome" read This Wiki article.

Bex, when I'm wrong...I'm big enough to stand up and say I am wrong...Although I've heard of these people, I can see that they indeed DID NOT get national attention such as those of white origin. That truly IS a shame. I do believe this is a current issue as ALL people are important, not just pretty white girls or white girls in general. Thanks for letting us know and again, I apologize for making a rash comment. I do that sometimes without the evidence to back it up.

Yes, I do know all the names you mentioned but not because of their skin color...because they are people. Furthermore, I think you are perpetuating a subject that is already caused mayhem in every community and that is the issue of race. We need to get over it people. All of this talk about "residual slavery" isn't going to help those who are currently being enslaved, those suffering at the hands of Human Traffickers, who by the way, come in all sizes, shapes and yes....even color. To that end, I will leave you with one thought. We need to make a decision to whether we are going to continue to bring up issues of past or concentrate on important issues we can deal with today, Modern Day Slavery and what it is doing to us as a nation. There's nothing we can do about past slavery (unfortunately as I too am part black); however, we can do something about NOW and the current events of the day. Great Article though I don't necessarily agree with it.

Pesonally, yes I do know all the names you have mentioned. To me its not about race or religion or anything for that matter, its the fact that they are missing and not by their own will. I do agree with you that there seems to be more coverage for the white woman than the black woman. It seems to me its all about the woman that makes the news unless its a very important man missing. Men get zilch as far as Im concerned. Back to the woman, I believe it all boils down to the area your in, and of course how much money you can afford to spend. It also is how much the parents search and push for the search of their loved one. Beth Twitty, Natalee holoways mother raised hell and made things happen, Jennifer Kesse, her parents never sleep and still to this day stand on corners with signs and do everything possible to keep their daughter in the light, and its 2 years now since she is missing. ..... I do agree with you so please don't hammer on me. I just wish people would wake up and see peopl
