Parents' Attempt to Protect Children Results' in Parents Arrest in Kansas

According to The Wichita Eagle, Ron and Diane Taliaferro had recently moved to Kansas in hopes of a new start for their family of five. After moving there, Diane Taliaferro became pregnant with her fourth child, and the family decided to give the child up for adoption so that the baby boy could have a better life. The Taliaferro family felt they could not financially support a family of six. Ron Taliaferro did have a new job as a handyman, and they were living at a home in Oaklawn. Things seemed to be going well for the Taliaferro family until June 11.

According to The Wichita Eagle, Justin W. Kraai had escaped from police custody earlier that day. The children had been outside playing and had just walked back into the Taliaferro's family home, when the front door was busted down. Kraai asked for a phone, but the Taliaferro family did not have one in the house. Ron Taliaferro then instructed his wife to go to the store and purchase a prepaid cell phone while he remained at the house with the children and Kraai. Once Mrs. Taliaferro had left for the store, Ron Taliaferro then hid all of his children in a small room and locked the door so they could remain safe from the fugitive. "I wasn't afraid afraid of him, but I didn't know what he was going to do," Ron Taliaferro said.

The police showed up immediately and arrested both Kraai and Taliaferro. Kraai was arrested for obvious reason. Taliaferro was being arrested for suspicion of child endangerment, and when his wife returned back home she was also arrested. The three children, Savannah who was 5 years old, Anna who was 4 years old, and Bubba Jo who was 2 years old, were placed into protective custody.
