For Americans touring or studying in Europe, London and Paris have a lot in common. Much of their history seems filled with comparable development and growth. There is even intertwining of cultures via war and conquest. Rome on the other hand is a city whose glory days are far more distant in time. Rome was the center of the world two thousand years ago, when all roads really did lead to Rome. The city also eventually became the center first for the persecution of Christians and later for its worldwide development. And as every Italian will agree Rome today is, like much of Italy, alive with continental romance. Visiting Rome is one stop shopping.History Before the USA, It's too easy for Americans living in the Western Hemisphere to begin their history education with the discovery of America in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. Truth be told there was lots of history more than a thousand years before that event. When you tour Europe you become very aware of how much "older" the civilizations there really are.
If you have an active imagination and like investigating the past, you will not possibly have enough time to visit and consider all the ancient structures, art and artifacts that the city of Rome has to offer. If your time is Rome is limited you will want to spend some part of it at the Coliseum. Used among other things for Roman gladiatorial contests. The structure today is as much a monument to Roman architectural and engineering design as it is to anything that actually transpired here. Walking amidst the ruins of the past gives one a feeling of transcending time and space and you can easily imagine yourself part of the scene in ancient Rome . There are few people who visit Rome who don't make it a point to visit the Coliseum. And of course don't forget to take pictures, the Colosseum is one of the most photographed sites in all of Europe and for good reason.
