There were an estimated 2,000 marchers who gathered in the streets of Jerusalem to profess their belief that Israel should be more interested in gay rights. There were expected to be issues at this march, so over 7,000 police officers were assembled to protect the marchers from any unwarranted attacks.
In 2005, an Orthodox Jew stabbed three marchers during the annual gay rights parade. Last year's march was called off because of this issue. Police were worried that there would be another such attempt this year.
Police have arrested over 130 ultra-Orthodox Jews in the last week after information was found out that they wanted to meet the parade with some kind of violence. Police did not expect to stumble across the information that led them to this morning's arrest.
A 32-year-old Orthodox Jew had created a homemade bomb and was going to use it in the midst of the gay rights parade. There has not been a solid bit of information that I have found as to how the police found this information out. The man was found and promptly arrested.
Jerusalem is populated with a mixture of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian citizens. Many of the religious in the area believe that homosexuality is an abomination and should be stopped. According to police, the Orthodox Jews have been more vocal and forceful then the other groups in voicing their opinions against gay rights.
The local government of Jerusalem is very supportive of the gay rights marches that happen in the city every year. They believe that it is a great expression of free speech and acceptance. There are some in the Jewish community that stand with the marchers and believe that the gay rights movement is crucial to Jerusalem.
Right down the road from this year's gay pride march, there was a conglomeration of protesters against the march. Ultra-Orthodox Jews who believed that homosexuality has no place in Jerusalem mainly led the conglomeration.
