There's always more than one way to look at a cliche!

For example, I heard a New Jersey politician say on the radio today, "I'm not going to buy a pig in a poke."

A pig in a poke? All I can see is Moe from the Three Stooges getting ready to poke a pig in the eyes. Poor pig! He doesn't have a hand to put up to block it!

I'm sure that's not what the politician meant - he meant that he wasn't going to buy something sight unseen. But it shows you there's more than one way to look at a cliche!

A lot of joking around I do at work involves taking cliches and other things people say literally. About a month ago, I was going away with my family for a long weekend. I was leaving early on a Friday, and a friend of mine was heading for a meeting. He said:

"If I don't see you, have a great time this weekend!"

I said, "What happens if I do see you?"

He thought for a second, and started to have a big belly laugh! This is the same friend who gives you directions like this:

"Go through two red lights and make a left at the next street."

"When the police pull me over, I'm telling them YOU were the person who told me to go through red lights!"

This is one of my favorites. I'm sitting with a couple of friends at a lunch table, and someone else we know comes up and wants to sit with us. He says:

"Mind if I join you?"

"Why? Are we coming apart?"

Try to put a different spin on some cliches - it helps keep your mind sharp and give people a good laugh! If you have any you can think of, post them as comments on this article! There'll be more to come!
