In June 2007, the Vatican released a document entitled "Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of the Road," dubbed "The New 10 Commandments" by many in the mainstream press. Most, if not all, of these commandments are currently laws of the land anyway, at least in the U.S. It is obvious that you should not kill or drive intoxicated. You should stop and render aid to accident victims, yield to pedestrians, etc. But the Vatican goes one step further and comes out against a rampant evil in our society: road rage.

Road rage is defined by Merriam-Webster as "a motorist's uncontrolled anger that is usually provoked by another motorist's irritating act and is expressed in aggressive or violent behavior." Road rage comes in many forms and I don't just mean flipping someone the bird because of their perceived poor driving habits. Shaking your fist or screaming obscenities are also lesser forms of road rage. More dangerous road rage behavior include getting out of your car with a weapon, a black jack or a tire iron to instruct the offending driver of what exactly they did wrong. What else constitutes road rage? Failing to let people merge or refusing to drop back into traffic because you want to be one second ahead of the next guy.

Takeaways
  • Vatican tackles issue of road rage
  • Most commandments are common rules of the road anyway.
  • Avoid sin: drive more courteously.
Did You Know?
Many anti-Catholic commentators complain that the Church needs to get with the times. Road rage is certainly a problem of the times and I for one am glad that the Vatican is taking this modern problem to task.
