"Clear your home and Free your mind"

Right away, I'd like to talk about scraps. Scraps can be anything from leftover food to buttons that inevitably fall off to torn t-shirts. It can all be re-used. Simply throwing it away might save you a little bit of precious time, oh say, 5 seconds. Instead of contributing to the horrendous problem of Landfills and waste management facing the world, take a little bit of effort and make scrap 'bins'. Our family recently converted to old trashcans to scrap bins. One, on the porch, for organic matter (plants); and one, in the house, for fabric and clothing scraps. I plan on hoarding these resources (old foods and clothes), instead of spending more money every time i need more. By saving food scraps (making a compost pile), I'm ensuring my future meals by using it on the garden. By saving clothing scraps, and turning them into new clothing, I'm ensuring that we'll always have clothes to wear. With a modern sewing machine, anything can be turned into something fashionable, and fun to wear.

So, the first point of this article: scraps are valuable resources. Use them, or give them to someone who will.

I find it hard to write an article about clearing out one's home and leave out recycling issues. Landfills are a very grave concern for us in the U.S., especially. The biggest problem is clearly plastic, which takes thousands of years to decay; yet the amount of re-usable material is also alarmingly great. Most plastic is recyclable, please do so. It doesn't take much effort to stop at the recycling center a few minutes every week. All plant matter can be composted, and fabric lasts a long time. If something gets a hole in it, and you just absolutely can't wear it, make something else out of it. It's very simple, and the internet is the greatest resource for sewing information. Any information, really.

Takeaways
  • Saving and re-using scraps of all kinds is a simple, responsible thing to do.
  • Re-sale and charity shops are an invaluable resource.
  • What are you going to do with all this new found space??
