Eight Basic Beliefs of the Seventh Day Adventist Church

The Last Day Church?

From the time I was born, until my mid 20's I was a Seventh Day Adventist. People often want to know what this religion entails. They associate it with the Branch Davidians, or the Armstrongs. While both had their beginnings in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, their beliefs changed over
the years, especially the Branch Davidians.

Seventh Day Adventists got their start in the early 1840's. There were a group of people , led my William Miller, that mistook Bible prophecy , and believed that Jesus Second Coming would be in the fall of 1844. The believers who gathered were extremely depressed when the great event did not occur. But in the process of studying about the Second Coming, they had stumbled across many of the beliefs that would become the core foundation of the church.
These early believers were first known as Millerites, before they became Seventh Day Adventists.

The Seventh Day Adventist have a set of core beliefs. They are:
1) That the Seventh Day Sabbath or Jewish Sabbath was never changed. They still observe the Sabbath on Saturday, but observe it from sundown Friday night until sundown Saturday night.

2) That Jesus Christ is coming back soon, and our work and mission should be to prepare people for this soon coming. Most other Christian denominations hold this belief, so this alone does not set them apart.

3) They believe in religious freedom. You will find Adventists fighting in courts, and around the world for religious freedom, and for the right to worship as you wish. This believe is based on the idea in the church, that those who worship on Saturday will one day be persecuted by their countries. So the church is trying to delay what they believe is immanent.

4) A life of abstinence. This not only includes abstinence from alcohol , drugs, and tobacco, but it also included the belief that animal meat is unclean. Many Seventh Day Adventists are vegetarians.

5) The belief that we should live a moderate and temperate life style. This includes simple dress, no jewelry besides a watch and a simple wedding ring, and no dancing or movies. Dancing and movies are seen as ways that the worldly lusts enter ones lives.

Allison, I also was raised Adventist. I have been all over the US and have found that some people in all faiths pick and choose what parts of the bible to use. Personally I was raised not to look at other people but God only and I have never personally or been taught to worship Ellen White. I do believe that her writing are inspired, but I also believe that some people take all of her writing literally and some of those were sent to certain people about their certain problems. Please do not judge the church because of a small group of people.

Seventh-day Adventist do not believe that all meat is unclean. It is true that many are vegetarians, but many also eat clean meat.

I was raised baptist but converted to Seventh Day Adventist and I dont find any of there beliefs to be weird. I know some people believe that they are cult like but that's so untrue. I am not saying that any other religion you believe in is wrong unless of course your the religion that doesn't believe in God. Seventh Day Adventist are not that bad once you get to know them then again like i said i was raised baptist and maybe that's why i dont judge harshly. I will say one thing if you do decided to convert it want be easy at first cause you got to give up on alot of things in life. I infact have to become a virtuous woman[[Proverbs 31:10-31]] or else no guy will want me.

I don't know why the adventist are trying to bring the old testament law to the new,1 Tim 3 speaks about abstaining from meats is one of the doctrins from devils. God said in Exodus 31 that the sabbath is a sign between Him and the children of Israel(Jews) forever so they should observe it. If you are not a Jew nor Greek then you are a gentile which means that law does not apply to you today.

IT is not correct that adventists believe all meat is unclean!! The bible says which meat is unclean such as pigs and rats. Sevenenth Adventists are real christians. Seperating pegan cultures from christianity is hard because the devil is working hard to bring us all down.

Interesting. I was born and grew up in a Seventh Day Adventist church. The foods eaten by Seventh Day Adventists are still based on Leviticus 11. The majority of members pick and choose sections of the bible to to believe and practice and some areas are ignored. There's a lot of emphasis on the Sabbath (Saturday) and most look down on people who attend church on Sundays. They worship the Ellen G White prophecies as though they were the bible and other printed Seventh Day Adventists "Bible"/belief books. They are also more focused on judging others and preaching than on living the life of a christian. If you wear nail polish to church you would have more sympathy if you killed someone. If you wear makeup you are considered to be Jezebel even if you are a good person. I love the church, but there are a lot of Ugly (internally) people inside this church and a lot of pretense.
