In the interview, portions of which were posted on the Argentinean Foundation for A Scientific Ecology website, Nils-Axel Morner, a paleogeophysicist, accuses the IPCC scientists of actions to "incorrectly prove their point." Morner has devoted nearly 40 years of his life to the study of sea levels and, according to the article, says that the claims made by IPCC personnel are "a lot of nonsense."
Morner points to several factors related to sea level rise. For example, there was a rise in sea levels during the period 1850 to approximately 1930-40 of 1.1 millimeters per year. After 1940, says Morner, there was no rise until 1970. It is this latest rise, Morner contends, that has caused the current debate between global warming proponents and opponents.
One way to check the rise, according to Morner, is to look at the rate of rotation of the earth. He says, according to the article, "If the radius of the earth increases, because sea level is rising, then immediately the earth's rate of rotation would slow down. That is a physical law, right? You have it in figure-skating: when they rotate very fast, the arms are close to the body; and then when they increase the radius, by putting out their arms, they stop by themselves. So you can look at the rotation and the same [figure] comes up: Yes, it might be 1.1 mm per year, but absolutely not more."
Morner then noted what he called errors or deliberate falsifications by the IPCC. One was choosing tide measurements from an area of Hong Kong which is known as an area in which the sea level is subsiding, but appears to be rising because of sediment compaction. According to Morner, it is the "only record which you shouldn't use," yet that was the measurement chosen by IPCC scientists.
