Oscar Worthy: DYLAN BAKER
Dylan Baker, recognize the name? Well, he has been starring in movies and television since the 80's. Most recently one could have seen him in the short-lived Fox television series Drive, as John Trimble. Or in Spider Man 3 he was Dr. Curt Conners and for the dark
comedy Let's Go to Prison he played the role of the Warden.
Dylan Baker's face seems like it was built for either comedy roles or political figures, which may lead to his being typecast, but then again work is work for an actor and it is what they do within any given role that sets them apart, regardless of similarities to previous ones. The website IMDB has Dylan listed has having received a mere 5 mentions around any type of film awards. In 1998 he tied for the Critics Choice Award for his work in the film Happiness.; this was at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival. Also in 1998 he shared the honors of an ensemble cast award for Happiness, as given by the National Board of Review. In 1999 he won the Gotham Breakthrough Award and was nominated for Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards. In 2004 at the Phoenix Film Festival he received a CopperWing Tribute Award and away from Hollywood he does have a Broadway Tony award nomination as well. However, where is the Oscar?
Dylan Baker has been most recognized it seems for his role in Happiness and it was an oscar-worthy performance for sure. Happiness is a Todd Solondz written and directed film; Solondz being the same man who directed Welcome to the Dollhouse, which received great acclaim. The movie is the type of story that connects many characters from various degrees of life and shows how their paths cross in negatve and positive ways. Dylan Baker stood out above everyone in the all star cast which includes: Jane Adams, Jon Lovitz, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Lara Flynn Boyle, Ben Gazzara, Camryn Manheim, Louise Lasser, Cynthia Stevenson, and Molly Shannon; to name a few. Hoffman for one has an Oscar for Capote, but Dylan's role in happiness as the emotional child molester stands out as a far more interesting and difficult performance.
