Being overweight is one of those things that cannot be understood unless the person has gone through it. Just like giving birth, you can describe the sensations, but to truly understand the process, you just have to do it yourself. Most things in this world are not made for heavy people. The world is made for skinny people. And, being a big person in a skinny world is not always easy.

One of the main obstacles for large people to overcome is clothing. Yes, there are clothes made in bigger sizes. There are even special sections of most stores. But, have you ever looked at these clothes? They look nothing like "regular" clothing. It seems as if clothing manufacturers assume that if you are over a size 18 you want to wear ugly clothing. Not every overweight person wants to wear tents.

Most things in this world are made for skinny people. Try being large and using a public bathroom. There is rarely even enough room to stand in front of the toilet and close the door. And, don't even think about having the room to get your clothing situated. It's just not going to happen. The only way to have enough room is if you use the handicapped stalls. And, then, you feel guilty because you may be taking something away from someone who has a physical handicap.

Restaurant booths are not made for large people either. There are very few booths that have enough room for anyone overweight. So, you either have to eat at a restaurant that has tables with separate chairs, or you can squeeze into the booths made for skinny people. Or, just don't go out to eat.

Overweight students have problems too. Those desks made with the chairs attached were definitely not made for large people. Try squeezing into those if you have a weight problem. They are rarely anywhere close to being big enough for large people to be comfortable sitting in them.

Trying to get through turnstiles if you are overweight is no picnic, either. You have to turn sideways and hope there is enough room to get through. You also have to go very slowly because there usually is not enough room to get between the rotating arms. So, you have to squeeze through both ways, side to side and between the arms.

The bathroom scale can be a worrisome place when you are overweight.

Takeaways
  • It is incredibly difficult to find fashionable clothes in sizes bigger than 14.
  • Large people cannot even use a public bathroom without difficulties.
  • Not all large people are that way from being lazy and eating too much.

good article, but don't think that skinny people lord over the world. I have been underweight all my life, and I pretty much have as much problems as you do. I have a hard time finding clothes too-my waist is 23, and the smallest size of teens sections is 26, and the largest for kids are too small.where do I fit in? so much for the world being made for skinny people.

I agree with everything you said. My husband is a big guy, and we have problems with the booths, movie theatre seats, airline seats, etc. It's a shame with as many Americans as there are that are overweight, there can't be a little more insight into designing this kind of thing.

I'm not overweight but I even find it hard to get in the bathroom stalls. Who were they made for? Kate Moss? I love the whole straddle the toilet situation to close the door. Stupid stalls.

great article but i don't think starving yourself is a good idea - and definitely not a healthy one. Try working out - could get boring, but spice it up with some music to keep your mind off of the struggle. Check out my article "Music is God: Worship Your Body"

route. I got cutoff lol, oh well overweight people are more prone to many diseases as average sized people just because of their weight let alone anything else. In the end its up to the individual to make the difference not society to make it for them. Cheers

pretty interesting article Cheryl. Not sure its something I agree with but sounds like you were having a venting session which is cool :) There are many reasons why people are overweight, underweight, to small or large in certain fitting areas etc. All I can say is WILL POWER WILL POWER WILL POWER. Easier said than done right? right. Anyways everyone knows why the hot sexy pics of people in clothing are to catch attention and to make you think you can look as good as they do in the brand of clothing being sold. Everyone loves to do something, and some people live to eat and not eat to live. Others are depressed and use food as a vice. Yes medications can make you gain weight, but I would say don't take those. The biggest question I would have whether you are talking about yourself or just in general is Do You Want To Lose Weight? If you don't this is what you are going to have to deal with. If you do, then try something like natural medicine if you want to go the medicine

Very well written. I can relate, when shopping for clothing, I find the clothes they make for bigger people are usually not very appealing. I am just glad there is a store like Lane Bryant that has better design for bigger people.

Don't feel guilty about using the disabled stalls. They can wait their turn. Gotta say though - I don't think we live in a skinny world.

i definitely agree with tiffan aller I am 5'8 120 and there is not a day that goes by i hear somebody comment on my weight how i'm a skinny minnie and lilbit, I go absolutely crazy when buying bras because the smallest ones don't fit me and how many size 0 and 1 do you see that are made for a tall women those sizes are reserved for short then women. I am the one not the norm and the smallest percentage in this country. I know it's hard to lose weight but its also hard to gain it when you have very fast metabolism and kids to run after as well.

I totally agree with you. I am slightly chubby, but not obese by any means. However, every time I go shopping for clothes, I am mentally and emotionally assaulted by the posters with "perfect people" in them. Also, has anyone ever noticed how anytime you go into a store and find a shelf of folded clothes or hangers of clothes on the wall, the smallest clothing is always on top or in front, as if shoving it in your face that you're larger than what's ideal, so you have to rummage to the bottom of the heap to find your size? Yeah, I'll be honest, that annoys the hell out of me. But until more people revolt against this unfair pressure to have a body like an anorexic 11 year old girl, the prejudice will indubtitably continue.

Speaking further, besides not passing judgment, nor thinking that a healthy weight is easy, the expectations are a bit lofty. You mentioned commercials and TV, yet we don't conform to alcoholics or diabetics either, alcohol is gloried as are the ads. Nor can we make _every_ bathroom stall disability accessible. While it would be nice, who is going to pick up the tab for the space and the materials? And consider the lack of space that already exists in parking lots and grocery isles alone, for people of all sizes. I've spent a lot of my life disabled, some of it in a wheelchair, but I realize that is not the norm. Unfortunately, space is expensive - whether it's a seat at a movie Theatre, a parking space, a bathroom stall, or a piece of land. While I agree that it is a dilemma, and the stigma unfair, asking the rest of society to pay seems unreasonable.

If you can't fit into the booth at a restaurant, that should be a clear sign that you should not be eating.
