Hikers have three main forms of shelter. They include backpacking tents, bags, and tarps. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. This article will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of backpacking tents.

Advantages

Protection

Backpacking tents keep you protected from adverse weather conditions better than other forms of shelter. If you use a tarp or bivy sack, you are out in the open and unprotected from rain and wind. Tents keep you warm from the wind and dry from the rain. A backpacking tent will also protect you from insects. If you use other types of shelter, you will be out in the open and subject to insect bites.

Environment

Backpacking tents also help you protect the environment and preserve nature. If you sleep in a hammock, you may have to damage tree bark to get it hanging. All you have to do to erect tents is find a level area and drive a few stakes in the ground.

Privacy

Most people want a little bit of privacy while hiking. Even when you're out in the wild, other hikers may also be around. Backpacking tents give you much more privacy than sacks, tarps, or hammocks. Now that we've covered some of the advantages, it's time to go over the disadvantages of a backpacking tent.

Disadvantages

Weight

While you're on a trip, you need shelter that is easy to carry around. Tarps and sleeping bags weigh very little so they are often used. Unfortunately, even the lightest backpacking tents are heavier than all other options.

Ground

You have to find locations that are level and free of water to erect backpacking tents. Sometimes, there will be unseen rocks or roots beneath you that will make it uncomfortable to sleep. Sharp stones and sticks can also damage your backpacking tent.

Time

One of the final disadvantages of backpacking tents is setup time. After a long day of hiking, you will likely be tired and want to fall asleep as soon as possible. If you brought along a backpacking tent, it may take a while for you to get it erected. If you used a bag, all you had to do was lay it down and climb in. Tarps are also much easier to erect than tents.
