Spanx, have you heard this term? It's the lates, best thing out to smooth your body when you wear somewhat clingy clothing or to avoid any lines, panty or otherwise in pants. Comfortable, stretchy and invented by a young gal who had started out cutting the feet of her panty hose in order to get that smooth line. She remarked that the dumb panty hose worked their way up her legs all nite. That's why she finally decided there has to be a better way.

With $5000 as starter money and some simple sketches she hit manufacturer after manufacturer. No takers. One even said to her he thought she was part of "You're on Candid Camera" thats how unlikely he felt her idea was to go anywhere. Bet he's kicking himself now.

Meanwhile Oprah is raving about the Spanx and this young gal is making a tremendous amount of money with her product. It seems no woman had ever designed an undergarment like this-it was an all male line of designers. No wonder nothing great came down the pike. Personally, I 'm fine with the thong panties but I have had one or two dresses where I wanted a really really smooth line and I tried girdle like underwear, uncomfortable and still cut at the waist and thigh. Spanx do not do this. No cutting, no bulges, no dimpling. A really good product.

Blakely, the inventor, has been featured in Inventor Magazine and has been on the View. With that $5,000 in savings she started out marketing this great idea out of the back of her apartment. She did her research on the internet when it came to patent writing, she did cold-calling with less than remarkable results. Her appearance on the Oprah show set the Spanx on fire. She was the 2002 woman entrepeneur of the year and Georgia Woman of the Year in 2005.She is now doing $150 million in retail sales, has 55 employees, offers 100 different styles of Spanx, four patents, and has come up with another new line of underwear. Spanx also comes in a longer and shorter version and underpants.

Takeaways
  • Spanks are the newest lightweight version of a girdle. No lines, bumps, cellulite, bulges to show u

I was disappointed in this product. The waist rolls, its hot and uncomfortable, and made my butt look as flat as a pancake. Just don't see what the fuss is about!

Great article. I was tempted to make a joke about going commando, but I guess I'll leave that to Seinfeld.
