To Work at Home... Or Not?

Evaluating Issues to Make the Best Choice for You

When choosing whether to work at home or not, you must first look at yourself. An honest evaluation of your skills and abilities, along with a good look at what your lifestyle will allow, will give you a starting point to jump from.

Though working at home has many favorable advantages, it also has its own issues to be dealt with, and in evaluating your own personality and work habits, you can give yourself the ability to "foresee" what kind of life you would have in front of you if you should choose to work at home. It will also help you to see the reality that work is work, no matter where you are doing it.

Envision yourself at work, then ask yourself, "Could I do something like this at home?"

In asking this question, look honestly at yourself and your home life. Would you be self-motivated enough to get the work done? This isn't about judgement, it's only about knowing yourself. It's ok to feel you need something or someone else to motivate you, however, if you are the only one involved, then this could be an issue, so be sure to be honest with yourself!

Another question you might ask yourself is "Would my family understand that just because I am at home doesn't mean that I can put off the doing the things that create income?"

Sometimes we are not taken seriously when we work at home, or others may not necessarily view the work we do as "real" work, so we can, occasionally, get pulled off course by the needs and demands of our beloved family (or others). After all, we're home for them, right?! Of course! We are also working in support of them. This is something that needs to be clear from the beginning. Know your family well enough to know if they would be able to comply with your needs in a work-at-home environment.

Next, you might look at your personal financial skills and ask, "Will I be able to budget enough so that when things are slow I won't need to worry?"
