In Hollywood circles, there appears to be a slight backlash in the attitudes surrounding being born of Latin descent. While there are many Latin actors and actresses who proudly acknowledge their heritage, others appear to blend into the shiny fabric of Hollywood glitz and glamour. These entertainers (some with Latin last names, and some without) appear rather uncomfortable when members of the media begin inquiring about their roots.

It could be said that these famous Hollywood actors are ashamed of their heritage. Some believe that the acknowledgement of one's Latin or Hispanic heritage is a virtual death sentence for his/her entertainment career. This is a touchy issue, one that touches on the hidden (and not so hidden) examples of prejudice and racism in our society. While everyone has the right and freedom to do and be whatever they choose, there is something to be said for the denouncement of one's heritage. There are many entertainers in Hollywood of Latin descent, who have reached the pinnacle of success all the while acknowledging their Hispanic roots. But there are some who find their heritage more of a hinderance, than an asset.

ASHAMED OF THE NAME?

In one of actress Jessica Alba's interviews, she states that her Mexican grandfather desperately tried to forget his Mexican roots. According to Alba, her grandparents spoke no Spanish to their children, as they didn't want the children seen as "different."

She's been quoted : "Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

Are Latino Hollywood Stars Ashamed of Their Heritage?

Is Jessica Alba ashamed to be called "Mexican"?

i'm half cuban and half african american. people allways call me black, and fair enough i am. but it seem sto me that if you have white blood and another blood like mexican you are always expected to pick the race other than white. i bet now if i claimed i was latino then everyone would be ashamed. but if a latino who is half white claimed that she was latino they would be happy!!

i think Jessica has a point. I'm Mexican and proud of it but no one can tell her how Mexican she should fee. Her mother is of Danish and German descent we don't criticize her for not being proud of that part of her. Jessica has a point in saying that Cameron Diaz and others don't get classified by part of their heritige. She probably has had parts turned down to her and may even resent her "look" which happens to be darker than other 'half-mexicans' like Linda Carter (Wonder Woman), Catherine Bach (the original Daisy Dukes), and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls). No one has criticized these people for not shouting about their Mexican heritage. We either have it or don't. No one can change that and not talking about it doesn't make us less. If anything, all of you should be impressed that she didn't change her name to be more anglo. She kept her father's name which is of Hispanic descent and she knew what that would mean in her career but that doesn't mean she should be labeled and have act

Correction to my comment: Instead of "No reason we are..." it should say: "No wonder why we are..." Sorry for that

I think worms don't discriminate while eating your rotten body when you die. All human feuds and fights are futile and stupid. No reason we are still and will remain being nothing but apes living in a tiny piece of dust in the "never ending" universe. Amen to that.

By the way, Julie, it makes quite a bit of sense to "slap" a label that her ancestors passed down to her. Regardless of third generation or first generation, she is who she is, and I speak English just as clearly as any White person in America, but I'm forever reading about African roots. If owning up to a person's race is "slapping a label" on, then I'd want someone to slap that label on me. When people ask me do I want to be known as an African American writer or just a writer, I say "I absolutely want to be known as an African American writer. Never mind, make it a Black writer, because I'm Black and I'm proud." I want Latino actors to take as much pride in their culture too (and there are definitely those that do).

I appreciated that John Singleton made such great effort to give Puerto Rican actors a chance to show "Hell yeah, I'm Puerto Rican, and I can act just as well as you can without trying to pass!" Did you see this movie? Did you enjoy it?

Have you ever noticed in movies that subtitles are provided with people with certain accents? For example, on BET's "College Hill," I saw more subtitles for islanders than a little bit, but I've seen Russian and English movies where not one subtitle is on. It's somehow like America is trying to make it seem like some accents are acceptable while others are not. That bothers me too. But going back to these actors, Hollywood does have a habit of separating the two. Black actors have a more difficult time shunning their features, especially complexion wise, and there are Latino actors who can blend in more, but I don't understand why they'd want to. I'd never want to be a part of anything if I couldn't show my pride in being Black.

I was happy as hell to see the movie "Illegal Tender" hit the big screen, not only because Rick Gonzalez is nice on the eyes, but because it took way too damn long for Latino actors to shine in dominant roles. Whoever that was in "Honey" was a joke and the other actors you mentioned never really mention their race or seem to take pride in it. Gonzalez wears his pride on his shoulders, and I love that in them. When I read in an interview that Bernie Mac doesn't want to be known as a black comedian, but would rather be known as just a comedian, it pissed me off. I can't stand it when people use their race to their advantage for monetary purposes, but shuns it when it's a "hindrance." If you're Latino, live it and love it. If you're Black, live it and love it. This country should be able to handle people being proud of their culture.

If you read Jessica's comments nowhere does she deny her Mexican heritage or claim to be white. What she doesn't like is the "Latina" label because with it comes an expectation that one is Spanish speaking and rooted in the culture of Latin America. Jessica is an English speaking third generation American, so it makes little sense to slap this label on her. Jessica's grandfather chose to assimilate, as did millions of other immigrants to America. That doesn't mean that he was ashamed of his roots. It means he dropped what wasn't working for him. White immigrants come here and drop their native languages, some even changing their names and chopping off their noses to fit in. But if a Mexican immigrant exhibits the same desire to get ahead, that person is excoriated. You're given this message to assimilate, but at the same time told that it's shameful if you do. It's ridiculous.
