Getting body piercings can be an exciting time is a person's life, particularly after the piercings have healed and new jewelry can be added to the holes. Nonetheless, this excitement can be severely hindered if an infection or other complications arise due to improper cleaning. Therefore, it is extremely important to take the utmost caution in caring for your body piercings, wherever they may be. Of course, the piercer will tell you how to properly care for your piercings, but here are some alternatives to what he or she might have told you, or in case you have forgotten.

If you get any type of mouth piercings, make sure to rinse your mouth after any eating or drinking other than water to ensure that your tongue is free of debris. Also rinse with an antiseptic or sea salt and water at least three times a day to keep any bacteria or germs from building up within your mouth and causing an infection.

If you have any external body piercings, mix a cleansing solution and dribble on the piercing site. The cleansing solution should be three drops of tea tree oil with a cup of distilled or boiled water. If tea tree oil is unavailable, use a capful of isopropyl alcohol in a cup of water. Make sure to let the water cool completely before using it, so as not to irritate the piercing. Also, be aware that while alcohol will cleanse the site, it may irritate the skin. Just make sure not to use too much alcohol. A capful in a cup of water is more than enough to cleanse the hole. Tea tree oil can be found at most of your local health food stores. Use this antiseptic rinse at least three times a day.
