I was a reader, a writer, an outcast

Wandering the hallways in velvet

You taunted me just like the others

But without meanness in your eyes

We held a job together, after school

With meetings every now and then

So I waited for you after the last class

And sat in front of your locker

Sometimes you smiled at me

Sometimes you joked with me

Sometimes we were almost friends

And one day I would become

Your high school sweetheart

I always sat alone during lunch

Because no one was kind to me

Who knew that one day soon

I would eat with you everyday?

I had to confess just how I felt

Even if I was afraid of what you'd say

So one spring afternoon I told you after work

And you admitted that you liked me, too

Now you always smile at me

Now you always joke with me

Now we are the best of friends

Sometimes I can't believe that

I'm your high school sweetheart
