Male hormone replacement therapy aims to relieve the symptoms men experience due to aging. There are a number of methods to deliver the testosterone to the patient. They include injections, pills, patches, and implants. This article will discuss the various methods used for male hormone replacement therapy.

Injections

Injections are the most common form of male hormone replacement therapy. They slowly release testosterone and are effective for up to three months. These injections are taken every one to three weeks depending on the manufacturer of the drug. Some patients don't like injections because they require regular doctor's visits and can lead to an increase in body weight.

Pills

Another method of male hormone replacement therapy uses pills. Pills are usually used for older patients to maintain testosterone levels. In cases of delayed puberty, they can be used to induce puberty. The disadvantage of pills is that they are known to carry a risk of liver damage for some patients.

Patches

Patches can also be used for male hormone replacement therapy. These self-adhesive patches of gel are applied to the skin and changed daily. After the gel dries, it is absorbed by the skin and releases testosterone throughout the day. Some patients who use these patches suffer from skin irritation.

Implants

Another form of male hormone replacement therapy uses pellet implants to deliver testosterone to patients. These implants are mainly used for the treatment of hypogonadism, a condition in which the testes don't produce enough hormones. The implants are embedded in the buttocks, abdomen, or upper arm. Patients usually have to have new implants every six months.

Tablets

Tablets are one of the last forms of male hormone replacement therapy. These small adhesive tablets are attached to the surface of the gum. They slowly release testosterone that is absorbed through the lining of the mouth. Tablets usually last about 12 hours.
