Boston is known throughout New England and the Northeast as a center for higher education. National academic powerhouses like Harvard, MIT, Tufts and Boston College are found here. An easy dozen other schools also sprawl across Beantown giving the city an active, young spirit. One of the smaller of this collection of institutions is Wheelock College. It may not have the huge student populations or high profile of Boston University or Northeastern, but Wheelock College caters to the needs of a select group of students, those who have determined to work with the very young. This distinguishes Wheelock, sets it apart from many other Boston schools and may make it the school that's just right for you.

How It All Began
Her name was Lucy Wheelock and she definitely had a dream . In 1888 she bravely reached out to the Boston community and offered instruction and training for those who wished to teach children at the kindergarten level. More than a century later professionals at Wheelock College continue to offer outstanding education for those wishing to enter the challenging world of working with young children.

While it began as "Miss Wheelock's Kindergarten Training School" it was from the beginning on the cutting edge of developing new and better ways for helping children to grow and learn. After some 50 years of devoting her life to her training programs Miss Wheelock retired but left behind a school that had already a considerable reputation for excellence in its field. Wheelock College's reputation continues to grow today as it offers not only undergraduate programs but also graduate courses and special programs for the enrichment of those working with and advocating for the young.

Academics. Teaching children is not child's play. Those who come to Wheelock ordinarily do so because they are firmly committed to preparing themselves for a lifetime profession working to educate or improve the environment of young children. This is not a school that majors in recess. Instead it is an institution that educates young people through a combination of classroom courses and practical experience and interning.
