According to Reuters, Wimbledon is in center of controversy over a pair of red panties belonging to the French 19-year-old tennis star, Tatiana Golovin.

The female tennis star, who was actually born in Russia, appeared on court wearing the red underwear. Needless to say she had the audience in shock and the referee reaching for his official rule book to see what should be done about the brightly colored knickers.

What the referee found was that she was in rule violation, said Reuters. The strict rule book stated that her red panties violated the "predominantly white" dress code.

But what seemed like a quick fix (or a quick change of clothes) really was not. There was a large discussion by fashion guardians at Wimbledon over Golovin's knickers. Finally they gave the tennis champ the go-ahead for competing in the set game.

A Wimbledon spokesman said, "They were cleared with the referee in advance by the player. On the basis that they are underwear, they do not have to conform to the predominantly white rule...if they are above the hemline they are deemed to be underwear and not shorts."

Other dress code issues include the ever rising hemline of female skirts and skorts on Wimbledon courts, reported Reuters.

On Wednesday Golovin beat fellow tennis champ from Taiwan Hsieh Su-Wei. During this match she also wore the red panties and returned to the court again on Thursday with the same color underwear.

Even though Golovin has been the butt of jokes (no pun intended) and news reports, the Wimbledon star responded back saying of her red panties, "They say red is the color that proves that you're strong and you're confident so I'm happy with my red knickers."

However, the panties just could not pull through for Golovin again. She lost to Austria's Tamira Paszek on Thursday, said Reuters.

Would Underoos be a violation of the dress code?

I remember reading something a while back about teams who's colors are red tend to have an edge. Its supposed to appear more aggresive and dominant to the opponent, and the players feel more confident in the color. Funny that something like this would come up, hehe. I should get me some for the court too.
