If you live in the Atlanta, Georgia area, I urge you to attend the next concert of the African American Philharmonic Orchestra. This orchestra is gaining in momentum and the word is spreading about this superb showcase of African American musicians. The orchestra members are at ease playing music of all genre, particularly jazz, pops or more classical compositions. I have had the opportunity to hear them on two separate occasions and I was not disappointed.

Under the leadership of Mr. John Peek who is the President/CEO of Music South Corporation and who also serves as the conductor and emcee, the concert goer is in for a delightful treat. Mr. Peek is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction from Clark College, now known as Clark Atlanta University. Mr. Peek was lst chair trumpeter with the show "Oklahoma" and studied conducting at the Conductors Institute, Columbia, South Carolina University of School of Music. He has performed with such musical notables as Ray Charles, Arthur Prysock, Dinah Washington, The Temptations, Louis Armstrong and many other well known musical giants. He was a mentor to Duke Pearson who hailed from Atlanta and for whom the mot recent concert was a tribute.

Takeaways
  • The African American Orchestra provides first rate entertainment
  • The conductor has played with famous musicians Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Duke Pearson, and others
  • Concert appearances need to be more widely advertised and promoted
