According to the Associated Press, Larry Lemay is well known in the area of New Hampshire in which he lives for one reason: his numerous speeding tickets. In fact, he has received four tickets so far this year for speeding on the streets. But now Lemay is taking the law in his own hands when it comes to the speed limit. He has decided to sue the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

Lemay is not exactly suing for money. Instead, he wants the Department to research and study traffic and speed limits across the entire state of New Hampshire to see whether or not speed limits could be raised in order to benefit drivers.

Although his is mainly suing to have the speed limits raised, he is also suing the Transportation Department to pay his legal fees and the cost of the complete study. The estimated cost is approximately $1,853, said the Associated Press.

Many citizens are calling Lemay crazy for wanting to raise the speed limits, but he has justified his reasoning for wanting the state to do so. He believes that speed limits are set extremely low on purpose so that the state can make money on drivers who are barely going over the speed limit. He told reporters, "The state is making a lot of money doing this, and I want it stopped...it's wrong."

The state's response is that Lemay's reasoning isn't logical and it would not make people safer on New Hampshire's roads, reported the Associated Press.

Dave Hilts, representing the state in this case said of the issue, "Common sense will tell you that going too slow is only a hazard when other people are going much faster...it's kind of a weird case."

Hilts also commented on Lemay's theory on the state cashing in on fast drivers. He said,"It seems ridiculous to me. I don't know what incentive the state would have to do that...I've not seen any evidence that that occurs. I don't believe it."

I've travelled in New Hampshire plenty of times, and I have to say on the most part the speeds are quite reasonable compared to, let's say, Rhode Island, where I live. Most streets that would be 35-40 in NH are 25 in RI. Consider yourself lucky.
