I think at least half my friends in High School hated their family so much they would almost anything to get away from them. Most kids just do tons of extra curricular activities, which also helped them get into the colleges of their choice. A few managed extra curricular activities while working, but blew all their money on junk. I hated my family so much that I was prepared to go to school and swore I would keep my 3.6GPA in all honors while working 20 or more hours a week just so I could avoid being home. In the process of simply avoiding being home I managed to save enough money to move from Tennessee to Washington with no problem.

The key is getting the right job. The day you turn 16 go out and get applications. Find somewhere that is open decently late. Perhaps quiet at night also. I feel like the perfect high school job is a movie theater. Why a movie theater? Well I'm glad you asked, because a movie theater has all the key things that a growing teenager needs. Those things are free popcorn, free drinks, and free movies for you and your friends. Not to mention all the work romance you can handle. If saving money is your priority, this is the place to be. Free movies give so much distractions that generally you don't have time to blow your money on other stupid causes. Another great thing about the movie theater is this: If you are the night concessions manager you can do your homework in the stand while waiting for all the movies to get out. I did my homework almost every night of the week while working more than 20 hours a week, although probably not legally.
