2007 Fantasy Football Preview: Sleeper Picks - Running Backs

Now that more teams are implementing the two-back system this season, there will be more backs that will see their stock rise in fantasy football. There are also those players who had rough campaigns in 2006 and look to bounce back this season. Here's my list for the potential surprise
 running backs in fantasy football.

Joseph Addai, Indianapolis Colts
Addai produced exceptional numbers as a rookie in 2006 and will now be expected to carry the load alone this upcoming season with the departure of Dominic Rhodes. Addai is a potential late first round pick, but mostly likely will get drafted in the later rounds. The possibility of Joseph Addai having a breakout season with the defending Super Bowl Champion Colts is high.

Edgerrin James, Arizona Cardinals
He struggled in the first half of the season with the Cardinals but returned to form towards the end of the year. For those who are counting Edgerrin James out for this season may be making a big mistake. Look for the Cardinals to emphasize a strong rushing attack in 2007 and for Edgerrin James to get back on track.

Laurence Maroney, England Patriots">New England Patriots
It looks like Maroney will be the featured back this season and that can only mean more scoring opportunities for the second year back. Laurence Maroney was explosive in 2006, scoring 16 touchdowns as the second tailback on the Patriots. Getting the majority of the touches ranks Maroney higher this season and my pick as a huge sleeper in fantasy football.

Willis McGahee, Baltimore Ravens
Willis McGahee should see the end zone much more in Baltimore, where the strength of the offense is their rushing attack. His draft status in fantasy football will probably be late second to the early fourth round. His potential to be a feature back in fantasy football is big and if you happen to snag him in the middle of the draft, consider yourself lucky.

I don't personally consider Maroney a top 10 back so I probably wouldn't put him in front of any of those guys with the exception of maybe Drew who I'd have around 13-14 probably. I think Westbrook could be top 10 but towards the end of that list with all his injury issues in the past and I don't know that Edge is top 10 until we see for sure he can succeed in AZ. My whole point is that I wouldn't consider a guy a sleeper unless he's legitimately a late round 3- round 4 type pick.

You make some good points Ryan. Well, answer this for me. Take a look at my article on the Top Ten Backs and give me your opinion on who you would replace on that list for Maroney and Addai. Thanks for your comments.

Honestly, Jerrard. I really do think a lot of people will be trying to get either or near the end of the first round. Brandon Funston (yahoo's fantasy expert) predicts Addai's average draft spot around 6 (he's gone as high as 3 in some expert drafts). Maroney is predicted around #8 provided a healthy shoulder. Ahead of guys like Westbrook, Ronnie Brown and Willie Parker. You have to remember Addai put up huge numbers last year sharing the load with Rhodes as a rookie. He's got the gig to himself now. About.com has him going at #8, Maroney at #13. FFootball Toolbox had Maroney at #4 and Addai at #6. Mockdraftcentral has Addai #4 and Maroney #9. Fantasy Football Cafe has them going number #8 and #14 respectively (the lowest thus far). All I'm saying is that Addai isn't fooling anyone, and Maroney isn't far behind. Maybe the average player, but nobody "in the know."

Hey Ryan, I think Addai and Maroney are good running backs, but besides yourself, do you think a lot of people will be lining up to pick those guys up in the first round? If so, it wont be too many people. I can see Addai and Maroney being picked up as backup backs in FF and they will end up being huge point producers by mid-season.

Ok Picklemogg, why isnt Addai a sleeper pick in your opinion? I would really like to see your column on fantasy football.

Dude- nothing personal, but how do you have a fantasy football column. Do you know anything about football let alone fantasy? Addai is a sleeper and will most likely be drafted in the later rounds? Huh? On what planet? Wierd. Plus on your top 10 RB you stated that you hadn't even heard of Frank Gore before last year. Wierd again.

It's hard for me to think of Addai and Maroney as sleepers when I think they should both be top 10 picks in a draft, especialy Addai. I understand "sleeper" in terms of maybe not HUGE picks, but when I think of sleeper I think of a guy like maybe Betts (with Portis dealing with the sore knee). When I think of sleeper I'm thinking someone coming out of the woodwork like maybe Adrian Peterson, Jerious Norwood, Tatum Bell (with KJ's ankle). I dunno - just my perspective.
