Interview with Chris, Who Supports a Death Row Inmate

Michael Perry Innocent on Death Row

Chris is a young women from Germany who met Michael Perry, a Texas death row inmate through a pen pal ad. Since then they have corresponded and become good friends. Chris is both friend and supporter to Michael, and speaks about his case.

Chris, could you give us a bio of yourself?

My name is Chris Schmitz and I am 30 years old. I'm a teacher at a vocational college in Germany, where I teach English and German to students aged 16 to 25.
Chris Schmitz
Date of Interview: June 2007

My main interest is to teach my students not only the relatively dry subject matter of the curriculum, but also tolerance and empathy, so that they will be able to take responsibility for their own actions as well as develop an awareness for the problems and concerns of others.

I understand you're a friend and supporter to Michael Perry, who is on death row. How and when did you meet him?

Y
es, I am a friend and supporter of Michael Perry's. I saw his pen pal request on a German anti-death penalty website in September 2005 and decided to write him, as I felt deeply moved by his words. I was shocked to read that a young man of 19 was sentenced to death for a crime he didn't even commit. I couldn't possibly imagine what it must feel like to Michael to know he was wrongfully convicted and most likely to pay for this with his life. So I basically got in touch with him in order to brighten up his days a little in that dark place the TDCJ keeps him locked up in. What started out as an ordinary pen pal relationship turned into a true and deep friendship over the months of our correspondence.

Please tell us a little about Michael.

Michael recently turned 25, this means he has spent the past 6 years of his life locked up in jail. Before he ended up on death row, his life was -- as he himself puts it -- "one hell of a rollercoaster", meaning that his life was not exactly that of an average teenager.

Michael was very much involved in these 3 killings. He also was involved in 2 drive bys with one involving a baby. His girlfriend at the time - Miranda and also a guy named Craig Turner - who ended up in prison. Michael never went to court!! Kristin and Michael were seen at the school talking to Adam and Jeremy (whom he had lived with previously). Michael is scum.. never held a job, never did anything to better his life.. he speaks now as the perfect person who was unjustly sentenced.. He confessed.. and told the officers were to find the boys bodies.. his DNA was at the boys crimescene.. Why is everyone defending a guilty man??

Yes, you can be sure I read everything. You are right. I did not know Michael before his unjustly incarceration. However, I have the feeling that you did not know him either. If that were the case you would reveal your true indentity instead of leaving hateful anonymous comments in his guestbook, his petition and in here.

Chris - Have you really read the volumes and volumes of court transcripts and evidence? Did you even understand what you alleged to have read? The jury was not biased or poisoned, rather the jury was provided with all relevant facts, all of which was accepted as lawful evidence as established by the laws off this nation and state. There was also no exculpating evidence that was destroyed. How convenient a claim, don't you think? Don't you think these alleged judicial failings would have been discovered and addressed during the appeals process? The alternative is that you think the entire judicial system is corrupt, at which point I would consider you a conspiracy theorist of the first order. Finally, I would be very surprised if you REALLY knew Michael Perry. You have known The Death Row Perry . . . I bet he seems a lot safer and reasonable behind bars, but I doubt you have known Perry prior to and up to the murders. You really don't know Perry, so please don't hold forth . .

I recommend you review the court record - including Perry's own testimony. The extensive court transcript is an open record at the Montgomery County Court and if you feel so certain of yourself - and feel strong enough to read the gruesome details of the murders Perry committed - you will finally understand that Perry does not deserve your pity or compassion. The judicial system worked in Perry's case - and an impartial jury of his peers found him guilty of murder without reservation and without even so much as a reasonable doubt. A guilty man is on death row waiting his turn. Society will be better off when Perry is no longer alive.

I am noticing a major trend with Texas having issues like this. Maybe they should just give up on the judicial system thing since they obviously cannot do anything right. Send those accused of crimes out of state for trial.

Texas is a shame, the death penalty is a shame! You are in my prayers Michael Perry.

To Chris, Dee and Michael. This was a very interesting interview /article by you Chris on Michael Perry. I have been reading about him a lot recently on myspace and occasionally drop in and leave a message just to say im thinking of him. I feel very sad for this young boy. I think it's a complete and utter disgrace that wrongful accusations seem to be a common occurance in certain states in the USA. Thank God there is DNA testing in this day and age because without this, there would be absolutely no hope or chance of a release for these people, esp if the many accused are framed by police or influential bodies. But hopefully, there is a chance for Michael to prove his innocence with DNA testing and hopefully many others like him. Thank you for this really interesting and informative article Chris. I also write to a wonderful man on DR in Nevada who has become one of the most important people in my life. i went to visit him when I was in the states recently for work and it was withou

Thank you for this article. Poor kid! How can Texas do this to an innocent boy? Stop the death penalty before more innocent people die!
