The Phoenix Suns' Draft Grade: F

6
After the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns had outstanding regular seasons I was one of the few people who said that neither team had any shot of winning of the Championship, not with the San Antonio Spurs in their way. I said both teams were soft. People said I was a "moron" for not thinking the Suns had a chance, but I was right. The Phoenix Suns went head to head with the San Antonio Spurs and the Spurs physically dominated them. It was clear to me all along that would happen and I don't know why so many other people didn't see it.

The truth is the Suns are just not a very physical team and in the playoffs you have to have a physical team if you're going to get through to the Championship. Fortunately there is the NBA draft. Every team gets their chance to improve. Every team gets their chance to find the missing piece of the puzzle.

It's clear to me that the Phoenix Suns front office came to the realization that I came to months ago. This team needs a presence inside. The Phoenix Suns talked about making a deal for the number three pick in the draft so they could get Al Horford. The Suns talked about a trade that would bring them Kevin Garnett. The Suns talked about trading up to one of the top ten draft picks so they could get Joakim Noah or Corey Brewer. The Suns said they were willing to trade Shawn Marion or even Amare Stoudamire because the truth is those players just aren't cutting it. They aren't physical enough. They have great offensive stats but you can get somebody more physical defensively who is still going to score with Steve Nash passing them the ball.

The NBA Draft is now over and the Phoenix Suns did not get Al Horford. The Phoenix Suns did not get Kevin Garnett. The Phoenix Suns did not get Joakim Noah or Corey Brewer.

It's mind boggling to me what the Phoenix Suns are thinking. The Phoenix Suns are very close to being a Championship team. All they need is a physical presence down low and somebody who can at least slow down point guards like Tony Parker.

  • The Suns need some toughness and defense.
  • The Suns drafted two offensive players.
  • Unless the Suns still have a trade up their sleeve this was a horrible draft.
