Moral Beliefs Vs Women's Health

Should Doctors Have a Right to Use Either as a Basis for Healthcare?

"When you see a doctor, you presume you're getting all the information you need to make a decision," notes Jill Morrison, senior counsel for health and reproductive rights at the National Women's Law Center in Washington, D.C. "Especially in a crisis situation, like a rape, you often don't think to question your care. But unfortunately, now we can't even trust doctors to tell us what we need to know."

In a recent msnbc article titled "Doctor's Beliefs Hinder Patient Care" , the above quote was used to back up the claim that doctor's refusing to or even mentioning the option of the morning after pill to a rape victim based on their own beliefs is harmful to women.

I find it interesting that with the issue of abortion itself that is exactly what happens. We have doctors and clinics such as Planned Parenthood, who's own "beliefs" about women's health regard abortion as the one of the best options for women who discover they are pregnant due to circumstances they had complete control over. Are these doctors giving women options other than abortion? Are they fully explaining all of the possible consequences of abortion and are they giving other options such as counseling and adoption just as much weight and fairness? The Planned Parenthood site offers several detailed links regarding abortion, yet only one fague page representing adoption options. They are also quick to deny any claims made about the long term emotional and physical consequences of abortion as well as the so-called fact that unborn fetuses cannot feel pain!

The term "Women's Health" is thrown around like it is something beneficial to the women, when in reality most of the issues referred to as women's health have far greater adverse affects on a woman's health than alternatives such as abstinence and adoption. Our so called "right to privacy" has put us at more risk in the past 30 years than in the past 3000! The worst part is we now have a better understanding of the risks involved in premarital sex, multiple partners, long term use of birth control and other factors, yet we have legislation pushing for more of it!

Staying healthy is essential...

Do you honestly think over 40 millin abortions would have taken place in the last 30 years had abortion been illegal? Society has come a long way since Roe vs Wade. There are many more solutions out there to help women prevent unwanted pregnancy as well as shelters for abused women, half-way houses for pregnant teens to carry and deliver their babies safely, and just more openess in discussing feelings and working out problems. How dare we as the most prosperous nation in the world be #1 in abortion and the only country who until recently accepted partial-birth abortion as a legitimate medical procedure? I am well aware of the pain and heartache associated with unwanted pregnancy, abortion, and adoption as well as the discomfort associated with pregnancy (I have given birth to 5 children myself). I am also not claiming a quick fix to the problem of unwanted pregnancy, rape, or spousal abuse in this nation. However, I do not think we should be attacking doctors who hold strong moral bel

...of desperate women, charging too much and often not knowing how to perform the procedure safely. The point is that abortion has been around since way before the nation-state system of international organization, and no legislation is going to make it go away.

Adoption isn't a solution that can fix everything either. People routinely ignore the fact that women have to carry a baby for nine months, which causes dramatic changes to a woman's body, mood, and quite possibly career. Also, in a decrepit and immoral country such as ours, you'd think people would find it irresponsible to have a baby and give it to virtual strangers. A baby is not a person, is incapable of considering the rightness or wrongness of its actions. Only through living, can a human baby gain the title person. People who adopt out have only created the baby component of a person. They leave the rest of the person-creating to another person. That's the height of irresponsibility. Also you happen to ignore the history of abortion before it was legalized here. In some instances, it was better than now, because it was not cold and sterile doctors but friendly feminists performing the procedure. In other instances it was much worse, because greedy people took advantage

"Eliminating the option of a morning after pill could reduce instances of rape." This is ridiculous. It's just like saying that if we eliminate heart surgery, people will take better care not to eat so much crap and be more likely to exercise. Potential rapists don't think to themselves, "well Plan B was passed by the FDA, so I can feel good about raping today."
