Online schools which are designed to provide your child with a high school diploma are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, many traditional high schools are providing students with the option to completely most of their courses through online classes and still be able to walk in graduation with the rest of their class. If virtual high school sounds appealing to both you and your child, there are several things that you should be sure to ask yourself before allowing your child to earn a high school diploma through an online school.

Does My Child Want to Do This For the Right Reasons?

A lot of the time, children simply do not want to go to school. Whether it is because there is a bully there or if they feel as though they would rather sleep all day, school is not something that they look forward to. If you feel that your child does not seem to want to attend virtual high school for the right reasons, it is a good idea to reconsider. Of course, there are many instances in which it is acceptable for your child to want to attend school online. Some of the most common reasons that students attend online school include the need to balance work and school, special gifted programs that the local school does not offer, or students who come from families who are constantly moving around. Returning high school students, no matter what age, often choose online high school. No matter what the reason is, it is important to talk it out with your child beforehand.

Is the Online High School Accredited?

One of the main problems that many students have with taking high school classes online is that the online school was not accredited. It is important to make sure that you learn whether or not the online school that your child is planning to earn his or her diploma from is accredited. If your child does not attend an accredited school, he or she will be likely to face bigger problems when it comes to transferring to a traditional high school or getting accepted into college. The best option is for you to find out if your local district, or a surrounding district, offers online high school courses.

accreditation is highly debatable.

Jody, you are right about the socialization depending on the parent.

School really does help kids bond more with their friends and get involved in activities. I know that some home schooled children are able to socialize just as much also, but it really depends on the parent. Thanks for all of the comments : )

You're advice of looking at the reason behind the decision is good. My son would definitely think that he could sleep all day! In the long run I think he would miss his friends- they bond so much being together at school.

Excellent article.I especially agreed about making sure the school is accredited. Although, the socialization part is not necessarily a problem if the parent makes sure the student also participates in social activities daily. Many times students who school at home have much more opportunity to socialize than those in a traditinal school setting because of the flexibility.

There is a lot to think about when deciding on virtual high schools and you have brought out a lot of good points. I liked the point about making sure the school is accredited. It would be such a waste if it was not even accredited. Sophie
