I am a woman mired in confusion. I am somewhat of a human oxymoron: black and semi-conservative. What does this all add up to you may wonder (or you may not depending if you could care less about me). Well, what it means is that when it comes to politics I feel guilty. Terribly guilty most of the time.

I had the "pleasure" of watching the Democrats parade in front of a mostly black audience last night. The host was Tavis Smiley and folks like Al Sharpton sat in the audience. There were a variety of questions posed to these candidates, the majority focusing on issues regarding race. More precisely, blacks in America. Many of the questions received expected, politically correct responses; a few however, were so offensive that I found myself grimacing (along with Al Sharpton, I might add) at the lack of common sense and perspective. What's the deal with Biden responding (when asked about AIDS in the black community) that he has told black men that it is not "unmanly" to wear a condom when having sexual relations? Or the claim that black women have other choices when choosing who to sleep with. Thanks, Biden but my daddy stooped raising me 11 years ago.

well i got cut off...so long story short. i do not usually argue race relations with white americans because quite honestly, (going back to the hubby example) it is like talking to a cheaating hubby who denies any fault in your suspicion. I guess what I do is to realize racism exists, educate and prepare myself for living as a woman and minority here and not spend time arguing or being angry about reality. It is what it is. I honestly do not care about what people think of my race UNLESS it interferes with my livelihood.

No what it means is that enough things have happened that are race related that cause people with any sense to wonder. If you hubby cheats on you 10 times and then disappears for a day--hmm...now he could have been just working hard or buying you a nice gift. But, he was probably screwing around again. If I doubted him, would I be crazy? I could be wrong, but does that make me a horrible person? Perhaps, if he had never cheated I would not have my doubts. Perhaps, if someone grew up during the civil rights era, he rightly has his doubts about race relations. Only a moron would throw an orange down from a building and expect it to fly. Like Dr. Phil says (I like Dr. Phil) the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. not that people and situations cannot change (like your hubby can become a God fearing Christian and never cheat again) but sometimes so much damage is done, trust goes out of the window. Now you specifically targeted African Americans, Let us look at the

Al Sharpton creates racial isues and racial tension where there was none. Not everything is race-related, but to Sharpton it is. Do you really believe everything Sharpton 'preaches'? Every African American who is shot by police is innocent? Every African American arrested was just a guy minding his own business? If you'd like I can look up all the Al Sharpton incidents and let you decide for yourself. Don't try to pass off his existance on the world. Does that mean that every wrong he has done can be turned around and blamed on us? Please!

And as far as Al Sharpton I will address this briefly. Al Sharpton, Farakkhan and the rest of the "racists" would not exist if there was nothing to respond to. They are not speaking about nothing and screaming into the wind; they exist because of the realities of American discrimination past and present. If you dislike Sharpton so much, then why don't you talk to the people that created him?

The point of this article is to show that african americans need to take responsibility for their own lives. Until this is the case, the black community's problems will always be cast off to someone else. The last thing we need is another program, another liberal who tries to save us. There have been years and years of this programs and the community has gotten worse. As the old cliche goes: anything worth having is worth working for. This "help" has handicapped the community like an overbearing mother whose kids cant seem to get it together.

Well first of all, Al Sharpton, who seems to be a hero of sorts to you, is a racist himself. I could go on and on describing events and actions which would support this claim, but I'll spare you for the moment. When you say "Biden", I'm assuming you're refering to Joseph R. Biden Jr., U.S. Senator from Delaware. I am not very familiar with this man, so I can't really speak for his state of mind when he made these comments. That aside, it's obvious that AIDS in the African-American community is out of control. It seems like you are sitting back and waiting for someone to offend you and your race instead of facing the actual problem. Whenever whites need to address an African American issue (and this goes for ANY issue), it's a real balancing act. Perhaps Biden doesn't have very good balance. I imagine to purpose of this 'convention' was to address African Americans and their current issues. This is what they attempted to do. Their 'solutions' might not have been acceptable to you,

Keep up Jenn. This is good writing. You got alot things that people really need to look at. I watched the show and I agree when it comes up to what black people are going to entertain. It's better we stand up for ourselves and stop this! Keep writing more stuff like this
