Apple's iPhone is released and actually manages to push Paris Hilton's overrated beauty off the screens of televisions across the country. (For a few hours, anyway.) Everybody is hyped for the iPhone and wants it and I suppose it does look a little cool, what with all the moving stuff around on the screen. Of course, I can't help but wonder what effect all those oils and other substances that routinely make it onto the average person's digital epidermis will have on the efficacy of that touchscreen. I know the touch pad on my laptop has already suffered due to the fact that I don't wash my hands every time before I sit down to compose. I can only imagine what the effect will be on that iPhone screen. Not to mention the fact that all those fingerprints are sure to leave their mark vis a vis a cloudy film building up on the screen.

As for me, I just bought a Cingular 8525 and, because I am a Cingular customer, I did consider going for the Apple iPhone. I'm glad I made the decision I did. For several reasons. One, I was lucky enough to come across what turned out to be a one-time deal to purchase the 8525 for just one-hundred bucks; to buy that iPhone I would have to write at least somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 to 85 articles for Associated Content. Still, I'm not above paying a premium price for a quality piece of equipment, so it really came down more to what I got for what I paid than simply what I paid. So how does my Cingular 8525 stack up to the Apple iPhone in regard to what I need from a cell phone?

I much prefer transferring all that oil on my fingertips to the slideout keyboard on the 8525 than to the screen.

Takeaways
  • iPhone is not equipped to take advantage of ATT's 3G broadband connection.
  • The 8525 has a slide-out keyboard, perfect for writers on the go.
  • Should you be concerned about the effect of putting your fingers on the iPhone's screen?

I've had the precursor to the 8525 and it was a P.O.S. Very poor quality, heavy as a brick and since it was windows you had to click, tap, click click....scroll etc to get to your stinking email. Feh. Horrible device.

I'm actually waiting for the 8925, which allegedly is coming very soon (this month or next) and will be like the 8525 with a tilt screen and a GPS. The Iphone is REALLY cool, but some of the ommisions I've read about are odd, and the Edge network only thing is a sin.
