The island was settled in 1680, but there was not a lot of business or commerce on this island until the 20th century. In general up until then it was a small farming area. It was a close nit society, but not a very large one.
In the 20th century according to Solomon's Island's official website the island started to see some growth based on its location to the water. When attending the celebration of our country's independence there are many historic sites on the island that reflect back to the styles of an earlier time that can be visited to learn about the island. It is highly recommended that you arrive on Solomon's island early in the day in anticipation of the fireworks ceremony.
Patuxent Avenue is one of the major roads on the island and it will be shut down relatively early during the evening, but Solomon's Island's official website did not announce a time. It is recommended to park at one of several sites from information on their website. These locations are : the Calvert Marine Museum or at Glascock field which is across from the museum, the parking lot for the Solomons Medical Center, or Our Lady Star Of The Sea church. There will be shuttles that run from Glascock field to Charles Street for guests to view the fireworks. Due to the location of the fireworks, Solomon Island's website states that anywhere on the island can be a good viewing location.
