The City of Chicago puts on acclaimed Independence Day events at Navy Pier and at Taste of Chicago at Grant Park. The city isn't the only place to view fantastic fireworks though. The many suburbs surrounding the City of Chicago celebrate America's birthday with big shows of colorful, bright fireworks. Many of the cities and towns will have parades, with the American Flag proudly unfurled to the tunes of patriotic marching bands.

Following is a list, compiled from different sources, of fireworks displays in the Chicago area. The suburbs of Chicago are in Cook County, Lake County, DuPage County and McHenry County. Many of these suburban cities and towns also have parades with floats and patriotic music. There are festivals across the suburban area with music and band concerts. Many towns have all day events with activities for children and adults. Festivals may features beer and wine tents along with Fourth of July food.

Fireworks shows generally start at dusk, between 9:00 pm to 9:30 pm. People like to gather in the community parks and visit with neighbors while watching the pyrotechnics. Some people prefer to sit on their own front porch and watch from the comfort of their own yard, if they have a clear view of the sky. Fireworks shows can be visible for miles, if the view is unobstructed. There are some vantage points where more that one show can be watched at once, which is delightful.

If traveling to the parks to view the fireworks, it is a good idea to get an early start, because traffic and parking can be congested, depending upon the area. If there are festival festivities with food and drink, all the better. Enjoy the camaraderie and have a bite to eat while finding a good seat. Of course, you can alway pack a picnic snack and beverages to enjoy while waiting for the show to begin.

Enjoy the fireworks! Have a happy and safe Independence Day.
