On June 23, reports the Associated Press, 9-year-old Brooke Porter and her 12-year-old brother, Chase, were playing on the beach in an area located beneath an overhead bluff belonging to Kenny G and his wife. As the kids played, someone threw what G's attorney says were a PowerBar and some Hershey's Kisses. Brooke was hit on the head, requiring four stitches to close the cut. According to the AP, Kenny G's attorney, Lee Blackman, said he was told "a PowerBar hit the girl accidentally on the head. It was just an accident." The AP says Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators have not determined who threw the objects, but believe two teenagers unrelated to Kenny G or his wife were responsible. Brooke and Chase's parents reportedly said they believe those responsible were purposely targeting their children.
The 51-year-old grammy-winning saxophonist and songwriter and his wife of 16 years, Lyndie Benson, have two boys, ages 13 and 9. According to the Los Angeles Times, G and Benson's main residence and his new 3,500 square-foot retreat house both are located in Malibu. The main house was built in 1991 and is a six-bedroom Cape Cod-style structure. G bought the house in 1998 for $12.5 million as a surprise for his wife.
The Times reports that a year ago, G's new retreat house was built on a Malibu acre next door to the main residence. This new getaway cost approximately $3.5 million and includes a wide-angle view of the beach and ocean below. The retreat house is said to have just two bedrooms, but four bathrooms. It also comes with a 9-foot-long piano, a tennis court and a 1,500-square-foot recording studio, replacing the studio at the main house. According to the Times, the main house studio was actually in a guest house overlooking the ocean.
According to his website, Kenny G was born Kenneth Gorelick in Seattle, Wash. His interest in the saxophone was piqued when he heard the instrument played on the Ed Sullivan Show. By age 20, he was playing professionally with Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra. Stardom came in 1987 with his fourth album, Duotones, which included his popular "Songbird."
