Nina was 15 and going up north for the summer. She felt anxious to get there. The greyhound she was riding in was smelly and an older man was giving her the perv eye. That's the eye that gives you that icky, gross feeling in the pit of your stomach. Her mom had warned her since she was traveling alone and she knew very well what to watch for. Nina was a city girl and could take care herself. She doubted she'd have to use her street skills. He could stop looking at her any time though, she thought as she rolled her eyes.
About 46 minutes later (Nina knew because she had a digital watch) she arrived in Pennington and was one one of the first one's off the greyhound. She looked around for her uncle's car but didn't see it yet. She shrugged and picked up her battered suitcase that held all the things she'd need for her month up north. She even managed to stick her diary in there without her mother noticing before she left. Her mom didn't like her having secrets and had asked repeatedly these past couple days what Nina was "scribbling about" but Nina said nothing to her mother about her hopes for this vacation.
A red ford pick-up roared into the parking lot of the pharmacy parking lot that Nina had been dropped in. She squinted to see who it was and giggled when she saw it was her cousin Grace. Grace had just squeezed by in her driver's exam and her dad let her take the old pick-up! "Whoooooooohooooooooo!" Nina yelled. She hopped in so fast that Grace hadn't came to a full stop yet. "You gonna put your suitcase in back or what?" Grace laughingly asked. Nina whipped out, threw that suitcase in the back of the pick up like it weighed a pound, and zipped back in the truck with a flourish. With Grace and Nina, it was like time simply didn't exist when they were apart.
