Whether you're updating your house, and replacing the shutters, or you just happen to have some old shutters lying around, you'll be surprised at how many different crafts you can make with them, and how easy most of the projects really are. For example, use four shutters to make a small table for most any room of the house. Stand four shutters upright, nailing or screwing them together, to form a tall square-type pillar. This will form the stand. The top can be anything from a wooden cutting board to a wooden tray. Glue, nail or screw on the top and set the table by a bed, for a night stand, in a window, to hold a plant, or in the bathroom to hold toiletries. Choose a top that fits perfectly, for a small table, or choose a large top to make the table look much bigger. To make the table more sturdy, attach the bottom of the shutters to a piece of wood that's larger than the bottom of the stand.
You can make different styles of tables by rearranging the shutters, choosing assorted tops, and painting or leaving the shutters as-is. You can nail the three shutters together, instead of four, forming a standing triangular pillar. Make two of these and place a piece of glass on top. Be sure to use non-skid, rubberized shelf liner on the corners of the triangle tops, so the glass stays put.
Make a longer table by using three or four sets of the triangular pillars. The top can be wooden, glass or something else.
Yes, you can furnish every room of your home with tables made from shutters, and each one will look completely different than the next. Painting the shutters will make the table look brand new, whereas leaving the shutters in the condition they're in will give you more of a rustic look.
Nailing the shutters together with three sides will also make the table look much different than if you nail them together, giving the pillar four sides. Butting the finished pillars together will look different than if you space them apart. Use two triangular pillars, and one squarish one, to form a table that has an even different appearance.
