Tattoos are an art form, and it takes a great deal of artistic talent to create a detailed well designed tattoo. I used to be one of those people with preconceived notions about tattoos and the types of people who had them. I was totally against tattoos, and I didn't think I'd ever have one - until I met my husband. My husband has several tattoos, and for the first time in my life, I realized the artistic value and deep emotional expression of quality tattoo art. I decided to get a ring of forget-me-not flowers around my ankle, and my reasons for getting that particular tattoo weren't merely cosmetic. I chose to get that tattoo at one of the lowest points in my life, and its significance is much more than skin-deep.

Choosing a Tattoo

When I made the decision to get a tattoo, I didn't take that decision lightly, and since tattoos are permanent, I realized I had one chance to make the right choice. Some of the best times of my life were spent in the upper peninsula of Michigan, and I loved the tiny blue blooms with bright yellow centers known as forget-me-not flowers that grow along the banks of rivers and lakes. I decided I wanted to have them forever adorning my ankle. Forget-me-not flowers seemed like the perfect choice, especially since they were a symbol of better times, and at this particular time in my life, in some ways I was feeling about as low as humanly possible.

Although I had recently met a man who seemed to truly love me inside as well as out, I was still hurting from being taken advantage of by someone I had considered a friend. This person was someone I had tried to help, but instead of repaying me with kindness and simply repaying me, he took advantage of my kindness and threw me away like an old shoe. He stomped on my heart, emptied my credit card account, and ultimately got away with theft. In a time span of two years I had seen more dishonesty and greediness than I have seen in my entire life, but I didn't let it completely break my spirit.

The Pain of Getting a Tattoo

Tattoo shop walls are lined with ready-made examples and ideas, but you can create your own tattoo for a one-of-a-kind work of art that will symbolize and serve as a reminder of an event or a time in your life.

Great article! Tats with hidden meanings are the most personal. I love it. :)

I can't even think about having my ears pierced.

Beautiful article! I too have evolved over the years, from one who once thought tatoos were just a poor form of self expression to a person who now personally understands the powerful symbolism that they can have. Thanks for sharing your story.

Lovely and well-written article. Thanks for sharing so much of your pain; like others, I am sorry you had to go through us, but the old cliche "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger" is actually true. I got my first tattoo, AFTER I turned 40! and it is a heart, pierced by a sword and encircled in barbed wire, with a banner across it that says "Forsaken" - so I understand very much why you choose the tattoo that you did. That one is on my left shoulder blade (and to M.S. Medina, I also once, much earlier in my life, considered a small rose on my breast; but I saw photos of my grandmothers as young women, and as women in their 60s, and figured it would be a giant peony in later years!) btw, the shoulder blade didn't hurt much; my tattoo of my beloved (now-dead) dog, on my upper left arm, hardly hurt at all (and I had a really great tattoo artist do it, it's gorgeous!), but the ankle and wrist ones just about killed me. But as K. points out, sometimes that physical pain is a good thing

Excellent, well written piece! I have wanted a tatoo for years. I know what I'd want, and it would also be for very personal reasons, for which few people around me would be aware.

I used to think that I wanted a small rose on my breast now that I've grown older I realize that it was a good thing I didn't or my rose would be long stemmed. :}

Ouch! I can't imagine having one. I don't even like to get my ears pierced! I'm sorry you were hurt so badly. This is a very honest, raw article. . . just like your feelings. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Thank you for sharing this story. I am sorry someone hurt you so much...it is very painful to be betrayed that way. My husband's younger brother passed away suddenly at the age of 20 and both my mother and father in law got the same tattoo that he had. Tattoos are very meaningful and every one tells a story.

What a sensitive article and I am sorry that you got taken advantage of. You are a kind sensitive person and deserve that back. If I were younger I am sure I would have a tattoo, but at my age, I just can't handle the snide comments I would get. Ha!
