Over the past few years Volkswagen has made some sweeping changes to their model lineup, including refreshing the Golf and giving it a new name, the Rabbit. To many people in their 40's and 50's this brings back images of the fun, cheap hatchback that VW released in the early 80's that most of the owners ended up having a strong emotional connection with. After the original Rabbit was discontinued, however, the Golf failed to replace the visceral emotion that the Rabbit envoked in the driver.

Enter the 2007 VW Rabbit, the 2-door version budget priced at $14,995 ($16,995 for the 4-door). This marks the lowest cost of entry into a brand new German car, and it's definitely worth noting. Stepping inside the Rabbit, you don't get the feeling you're in a less than $15k car. The interior appointments are modernly designed, ergonomically pleasant, and pleasant astehetically and to the touch. No cheap plastics and panel gaps here - as we've come to expect from the Germans. Driver leg and headroom are very good for a compact car, and comparable to most midsized sedans. Backseat room again is on par with larger competitors like the Accord, Camry, and Altima - definitely not what you'd expect from a car less than 170 inches long. Cargo room is average for it's class, and the 60/40 fold down rear seats give you almost a fully flat surface to put large cargo in.
