The Birth Control Pill Can Be Deadly

Birth Control Pills Nearly Cost Me My Life

As I write this I am dreading another doctor appointment. Needles never used to bother me before. Of course, before now, I never had a reason to get a weekly blood test. But for the next 6 months, it is part of my routine. My arms are covered in bruises, a side-effect from Coumadin, a blood-thinner which will prevent another blood clot from forming in my lungs. I never thought this could happen to me. I am only 22 years old.

It all started a couple months ago, when I decided to go on “the pill.” I paid little attention to the warning pamphlet that accompanied my birth control pills. Besides, those rare side effects (including strokes, blood clots, heart attacks) only pertain to woman who smoke or are over the age of 35. That’s what I used to think.

Day one of the pill was fine. I experienced no side effects. The next day was horrible, but I did not attribute it to the pill. It was my first day back at college. I was in the middle of ballet class when suddenly I felt very dizzy and hot. I started to see black dots. I collapsed. When I woke up I wondered, “what the hell are all these people doing in my bedroom?” I was extremely disoriented. One of my classmates brought me some water, which I drank and promptly threw up.

The ambulance came. A man with a lizard tattoo on his neck carried me to the ambulance. My EKG was okay, so I was allowed to return home that same day. My fainting was thought to be caused by dehydration. Nobody even asked if I was taking a birth control pill.

During the next few weeks I developed a cough. I felt an enormous pressure near my heart. I felt like I was being tightly squeezed. The pain was constant but still bearable. I have a very high tolerance for pain. I did not see a Doctor about this until I began to cough up blood.

My Doctor said my chest was probably sore from coughing, and that a sinus infection had moved to my chest wall. He prescribed antibiotics and rest for the next few days. I rarely listen when a Dr tell me to take it easy, but the pain in my chest had gotten so bad that I started skipping my dance classes.

Amazing! This tells me that medicine is a victim to research and research is a victim to big money backing what they want and what is politically correct. They don't want us to know the truth, and often it's because not enough research money has been provided to conduct the research about contraceptives. People want to have sex when and with whom they want without consequences...answer...contraception. Press against contraception or abortion, which they don't tell us acts an abortifacent when the sperm and egg create life anyway, is downplayed. This is one huge lie that many, many women either aren't aware of or buy into. Often the very place that tauts advocacy for women's health and provides contraceptives also provides abortions. What a major contradiction that is...Big Business...Buy contraceptives equal no consequences of pregnancy to sex .... contraceptive fails...abortion is the backup... it's all so logical... Now I see it! Women suffer greatly due to this huge lie

Would this happen on the birth control patch?

I am so glad you wrote this. I was on the pill for a short while in my life and the migraines I had were horrendous. I think every woman needs to read past the name brand advertised junk that they try to feed us (ie symptoms are VERY RARE, etc.) and get smart about it all being a big money making machine that doesn't give a damn about women's health.

OMG! You are a walking miracle! One of my daughters who had taken birth control pills for several years, got an 'urgent' call from our doctor. Seems there was 'new' and 'immediate' declaration that women who get hormonal migraines (the very reason she was on b.c.) and who get 'auras' just before their headaches, are having strokes at an alarming rate! Thankfully, our doctor/nurse practitioner is a fabulous advocate! My daughter's off the pill before she got into harm's way. Thankfully, you're a survivor too! Write on!

Wow, I never figured the birth control pill could be that bad... but I have actually never really heard of this sort of occurance happening before- just because it happened to you personally doesn't mean it suddenly isn't rare anymore. It still is very rare, and you were one of the unfortunate few that got it. Hope you're feeling better.

Wow!! Just like you, I believed that the side-effects were very rare and that, because I don't smoke or drink; I had nothing to worry about. I experienced other bad side effects, during my time on teh pill. I am now on the patch but am thinnking about giving up birth control altogether...reasons that have nothing to do with side effects in general. I am glad you are ok.
