With the onset of summer comes pool parties, barbecues, and of course the 4th of July. Finding something to do for the 4th of July in Newport News, Yorktown, and the surrounding cities is very easy. Many places offer an assortment of fun things to do during the day, and into the night.

Fireworks in York County will be held on the historic York River celebrating our nation's freedom in the place where the American forces defeated the British in the last major battle of the American Revolution. This is where our country's independence was won. The celebration this year is themed, "Jamestown to Yorktown."

The family oriented activities include a parade that starts at 11 a.m., an arts and crafts show, classic car show, and live entertainment. There will also be children's activities from 11 - 3 that include pony and horse rides. There will be concession stands, and live entertainment. The activities begin at 8 a.m. and end at 9:15 with a fireworks show over the York River. For more information call York County Parks and Rec at 890-3500.

Virginia Beach will be celebrating the 4th at Mount Trashmore Park. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. and are free to the public. The day will begin at 4 p.m. with a variety of things to do with your family. There will be interactive family games, and from 4:30 to 8:30, your children can have their faces painted, bounce on inflatables, and sing karaoke. Local musical sensation "Butter" will be performing on the main stage from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., followed by their alter-ego band, Bootylicious.

Festival foods will be served though out the day. Grab some hotdogs, hamburgers, BBQ, or Italian Sausages. Snow cones, lemonade and water will also be available. Parking will available at 10 a.m. at Mount Trashmore for a $5.00 fee.

You can also see fireworks in Virginia Beach at First Landing State Park. Sand castle contests, beach games, food, and more are just a few of the things your family can do that day. Fireworks will be on display from the park's beach on the Chesapeake Bay that evening.
