Human Resources - Are There Any Humans in Resources?
Having the good fortune (or misfortune) of being currently unemployed, I've taken to the new job search tools available for looking for employment on-line. Career-builder, Monster, Sologig and the list goes on. All of them claiming to have NEW and EXCITING job postings.
So, I reply and hit submit application now and I eagerly await the automatically generated email thanking me for my response. And, that's about pretty much the end of my dialog with Human Resources.
Being the self-starter that I am, I ferret out the phone number's of the companies I'm applying to and call to verify my resume was received. You would think I was asking for the combination to Gonzalez' secret documents cabinet!
I was actually reprimanded for going to Human Resources to apply for a job in PERSON without an appointment. What does Human Resources do, if not to meet with prospective applicants? No, today, you send in your anonymous on-line application to a dark hole, hoping your resume lands in the right hands. Praying you used all the industry buzz words so that the scanner spits out your qualifications as skills sets they want to pursue.
The best part friends, is now you are giving an assignment as part of your interview. I think this is the lazy man's version of getting free work! Hmmm.....John, any new idea's for that marketing project? Nope - let's put an ad in the paper and get them to give us a sample of their work, then we can golf for the next 6 months.
OK, sorry if I sound a bit bit t ttt er --- maybe not golf for 6 months.
But really, what does Human Resources do. There are recruiters, there are websites and job boards all making Human Resources obsolete. So, then, what is Human Resources doing?
Maybe, Human Resources, when an applicant comes to speak to you about working for your organization, you'll see it as a tool to promote your company. Otherwise, it could be your resume you need to dust off!
